The series first premiered in February this year, receiving widespread critical acclaim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it took nearly 10 years to produce the pricey project.

Now, Shogun is making history as the first Japanese-language series to be nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. It’s only the second non-English-language show to be recognized in the category, following South Korea’s Squid Game.

Year of the Bear

Earlier this year in January, The Bear tied as the 75th Emmys’ biggest winner with six major awards and four Creative Arts Emmys. At the previous ceremony, the series only received 13 nominations, almost doubling it with this year’s 23.

It’s also a record-breaking moment for The Bear, as it became the most nominated comedy series in a single year, surpassing 30 Rock which had 22 in 2009.

This time—joining Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—fan favorites Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas both received acting nominations for their supporting roles. Edebiri graduated from being nominated for her supporting role to the Best Actress category.

The Bear also had a plethora of outstanding guest actors, now nominated for their performances. These include Jon Bernthal, Bob Odenkirk, Will Poulter, Olivia Colman, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Other Primetime Highlights

Overall, Netflix still leads other streaming services and channels with 107 nominations across 35 programs. Some of its biggest entries include The Crown (18), Ripley (13), and Baby Reindeer (11).

Following FX is HBO with 91 nominations (29 programs) and Apple TV+ with 72 (16 programs). However, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building is the third most nominated series this year with 21. HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country followed with 19 nominations.
