Scroll down to see the six films…
Love Story (1970)
While it was a huge box office hit when it was released in 1970, Arthur Hiller’s Love Story is almost forgotten by today’s generation. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, the film follows the tragic tale of Oliver and Jenny (Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw on their Oscar-nominated performances) who, despite different social classes and upbringing, fall in love.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Nora Ephron’s Sleepless Seattle is Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks’ second outing as a love team. The film just celebrated its 25th year anniversary, and it remains to be one of the best romantic comedies ever made. Ryan plays Annie Reed, an engaged journalist who falls in love with widower Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) after hearing his tragic life story on a cheesy radio channel hosted by a celebrity psychiatrist.
Sense and Sensibility (1995)
Adapted from the famous Jane Austen novel, Sense and Sensibility was a big hit amongst audiences in 1995. Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet portray sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, whose estate is taken away from their family when their father dies. Women in 1800s England are not allowed to own property, says the law. They move into the small villa owned by a rich aunt, and soon experience courtship from very different gentlemen. Marianne is more of a romantic, allowing her senses to guide her romantic decisions. While Elinor, who is forced to look after her family, must be practical and sensible. Their love lives go astray because of their decisions.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Entertainment Weekly made a splash this week, when they reunited the four principal cast members of this 1997 romantic comedy classic for their latest cover. The internet has gone crazy for the reunion, and everybody is remembering how great the film is. The 90s movie queen Julia Roberts plays Julianne, whom after receiving news that her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) is marrying a Chicago socialite (Cameron Diaz), does everything in her power to break them up and get the man who she thinks she deserves.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Behind the teen comedy madness, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is actually a very clever adaption of William Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, replacing the Italian village of Verona with a West Coast High School. Julia Stiles plays the shrew, a woman so angry and pessimistic, that she immediately repels men. A young man then hires the school’s infamous bad boy (Heath Ledger) to date her, in hopes that if she is happier, their father would allow her beautiful, younger sister Bianca to start dating too.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
This is one of the most tragic movies you will ever watch. You’ve been warned. Coming from brilliant auteur Michel Gondry, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind follows Joel Barish (Jim Carrey in his best role ever), who hires a specialty company to erase his memory of the love of his life, the eccentric Clementine (Kate Winslet).
All films on this list are currently streaming at NETFLIX Philippines.
