With two episodes remaining, HBO Max’s DC drama Lanterns has spent its first season turning a murder mystery into a meditation on failure, guilt, and the cost of wearing a badge that also happens to glow green. As the show barrels toward its season finale on October 4, 2026, the central question that opened the series-what actually happened to Hal Jordan- still hasn’t been answered. The show seems determined to keep viewers guessing until the last possible moment.
The season began in 2016, with rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) paired against his will with the weathered Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) to investigate a fatal shooting in the fictional Nebraska town of Rushville. What looked like a small-town crime unraveled into a cosmic conspiracy involving the shapeshifting Manhunter Zoe Macon, buried alien technology, and a corrupt ranching family that had run the town for generations.

Hal Jordan’s Death, Explained
Jordan, brilliant but self-destructive, treated the badge as a license rather than a responsibility, and Stewart’s slow disillusionment with his mentor became the show’s engine. The midseason finale brought that timeline to a violent close. Zoe Macon and her husband were killed, Rushville was left in ruins, and Stewart, disgusted by what the ring had cost him, handed it back to the Guardians rather than accept his promotion.
Episode 6 of Lanterns then jumped forward ten years, and the show revealed what fans already suspected from the pilot: Hal Jordan is dead. Stripped of his ring long before his death, having spent a decade trying (and mostly failing) to make amends with the people of Rushville, Jordan was found shot in his own home. Stewart, now retired from heroics and running a business with his brother, returns to investigate, only to discover the ring has vanished along with any obvious suspects.
In the episode’s final scene, he digs up Jordan’s grave, retrieves the decommissioned ring, and activates the “Halogram,” a stored digital copy of Jordan’s consciousness that the show has drilled into its mythology since the premiere. Whether that hologram is a tool or a red herring remains the season’s most tantalizing open thread.
The Lanterns Season 1 Suspects
Predicting where Lanterns goes from here means reckoning with a suspect list that includes Billy Macon, who lost his father, his stepmother, and eventually his ex-wife to Jordan’s crusade; and Noah, whose gentleness has made him the show’s most likely misdirect. Expect the seventh episode to narrow that field, using the Halogram as an investigative partner whose knowledge of Jordan’s final years complicates the case.
The finale itself will likely reveal that Jordan’s death was the delayed consequence of the choices he made in 2016, a fittingly grim thesis for the show. Given the creative team behind it, Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, a tidy resolution seems unlikely.
