A Light Sadly Goes Out: Lisa Marie Presley Passes Away At 54 - Meaningful Life

The singer, songwriter, philanthropist, and daughter of the King of Rock and Roll has died following her hospitalization.

Lisa Marie Presley was brought to the hospital on Thursday, January 12. She died later that day, at only 54 years old.

According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, they received a report of a woman in full cardiac arrest at Presley’s address.

Paramedics arrived six minutes later and performed CPR. When it was determined that she had signs of life, she was taken to a nearby hospital.

Her mother, Priscilla Presley, confirmed her passing in a statement to People magazine, saying “It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us.

“She was the most passionate, strong and loving woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. At this time there will be no further comment.”

Presley recently attended the Golden Globes to celebrate the nominations Elvis received and to support actor Austin Butler, who portrayed her father in the biopic.

Butler thanked the Presley family in his acceptance speech, saying “Thank you for opening your hearts, your memories, your home to me. Lisa Marie, Priscilla, I love you forever.”

Tributes

Messages for Presley and her family came pouring in light of the news.

Grammy-winning songwriter Diane Warren expressed her sorrow at the “horrible news,” sending “love and prayers to Priscilla and Lisa Marie’s children right now.”

Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan wrote, “There is heartbreak and then there is sorrow. This would be sorrow and on more levels than I can count.”

Singer and actress Leann Rimes hopes “she is at peace in her dad’s arms,” adding that there has been “too much grief in just a couple of years,” within Presley’s family.

Brian Wilson, co-founder of the Beach Boys, remembers Presley as “someone so young and full of life.”

Life and legacy

Born on February 1, 1968, Lisa Marie was the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. Following her father’s death when she was only nine years old, she became a joint heir to his estate alongside her grandparents.

Presley pursued her music career, producing three albums and making her own mark in the industry. Her debut album, To Whom It May Concern, reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single, “Lights Out,” has mentions of her family background, taking on a darker tone.

She was also a dedicated philanthropist who oversaw the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. The EPCF aided homeless families by providing them with rent-free housing, child day care, counseling, and other tools that would help them break the poverty cycle.

A mother of four children, Presley recently penned an essay in honor of her son, Benjamin Keough, who passed away in 2020.

“It’s a real choice to keep going, one that I have to make every single day and one that is constantly challenging to say the least… But I keep going for my girls,” she wrote.
