The Princess-turned-Queen herself is making her way back to Genovia.
In a video posted to her social media pages, Anne Hathaway confirmed that she’s heading “Back to Genovia” for the third installment of The Princess Diaries.
“Miracles happen,” the actress wrote in the caption. The video itself features clips from the first two movies and a screenshot of an article about the upcoming project. “The fairy tale continues,” she added.

Everything We Know About Princess Diaries 3
In Deadline’s exclusive article, it was announced that Adele Lim will be directing the third installment in the beloved Disney franchise.
Lim has worked with Disney before, as the co-writer of Raya and the Last Dragon. She also co-wrote the screenplay for Crazy Rich Asians. Last year, Lim made her directorial debut with the R-rated comedy film Joy Ride.
Joining her, Debra Martin Chase will be producing Princess Diaries 3 while Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide,” Lim told Deadline.
No plot details have been shared yet, but the film could possibly borrow some ideas from Meg Cabot’s original novels. The latest addition to the series, The Quarantine Princess, was just released last year.
There’s also no official release date yet, but The Hollywood Reporter stated that Disney plans to begin filming next year.
Who’s Coming Back to Genovia?
Aside from Hathaway, no cast members have been confirmed either. However, over the years, many of them have expressed interest in returning to the franchise.
Both Mandy Moore and Sandra Oh who were in the first movie said that they would love to make an appearance in the next film. “I am ready for the queen,” Oh told Entertainment Weekly last year. “Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”
Chris Pine, who played the main love interest in the 2004 sequel, was also open to returning to The Princess Diaries. When a fan asked if he prays every night for a third installment, Pine replied, “Have you been reading my diary?”
However, perhaps Hathaway’s most important co-star in the series, Julie Andrews has shared that she probably won’t be involved. “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” she told Access Hollywood in 2022.
Now 89 years old, Andrews has mostly been doing voice acting for animated movies. She’s also the voice of Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton.
Despite this, Hathaway has expressed that she would do anything to get Andrews involved in the sequel. “I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” she told Entertainment Tonight.
Another Hathaway Sequel in the Works?
While nothing has been officially confirmed, the possibility of The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been generating plenty of interest in recent news.
Puck magazine first reported that Disney was working on the sequel and that it’s in the early stages of development.
Sources have also confirmed to Deadline that Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter of the first movie, was tapped to work on the sequel’s script.
While the film’s stars Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt have had reunions over the years, they have expressed their doubt that a continuation could ever happen.
Despite the uncertainty, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has been added to the official Production List website. The official site monitors all major film and TV projects currently in pre-production and active development.
According to the listing, the sequel “follows Miranda Priestly at the end of her career, facing the decline of traditional magazines. She must compete with her former assistant, Emily Charlton, now a high-powered executive at a luxury group, for crucial advertising dollars.”
The site also lists David Frankel and Wendy Finerman returning as director and producer respectively. The shoot date is set for November 30, 2024.
