I read Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians back when it was released it in 2013, devouring the book within a day. It was an addicting and funny—a juicy read that I couldn’t put down. When the following books of the trilogy were released (China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems), I ran to the book store to get my fix! When I found out that a Hollywood film was to be made out of the first installment, I knew I was going to be big. The wait for the trailer began. To my excitement, it was finally released last Monday.

Crazy Rich Asians tells the story of Rachel Chu, an American-born Asian working as an economics teacher. She thinks she’s met the love of her life, Nick Young, a fellow professor. He soon invites her to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Upon arriving, she discovers that he was born into one of the richest families of the country. Problems arise when she meets the entire family, as her boyfriend’s disapproving mother lets her know that she’s not about to let just any girl have Nick’s heart and enjoy the family fortune. She is suddenly thrown into Nick’s crazy rich lifestyle, trying hard to impress his high society family and friends.
After seeing the trailer, I was more excited than ever. The “crazy rich” aspects of the book are perfectly portrayed in the two minutes we got. There was a lot of controversy over the casting of the bi-racial Henry Goulding as the male lead, Nick, but he fits the role of the rich, educated boy from Singapore (trying to live “a normal life” abroad) absolutely well. You forget that Constance Wu rose to fame playing a Fresh Off the Boat Asian mother instantly when you see her act as Rachel. In the American TV series, Wu is known for playing a Chinese mother with a thick accent, it’s great and refreshing to see her evolve in a different role that still touches on her Asian roots.

However, there were still some burning questions that remained after seeing the trailer. Firstly, where was Kris Aquino? What was with all the hype that she was going to be part of Crazy Rich Asians? Will her role in the film be a mere cameo? Did the Philippine media over blow her role in this? Only time will tell!
Also, as I watched the glitz and glam portrayed in the trailer, I couldn’t help but think…is this the Asian Gossip Girl we’ve all been waiting for? The shade and cattiness of those with wealth are always entertaining, and I hope director Jon M. Chu finally hits the nail in the head, and gives us not only a quality film but one that is truly fun to watch. Being a Hollywood production, it really is a big deal that the entire cast of leads are Asian. It’s refreshing to see an internationally marketed movie without a stereotypical portrayal of Asians (putting us in supporting roles of Kung fu masters and comedic “FOBs”).
Lastly, I was a little concerned with the preview of Tyersall Park, given the description in the book, it felt a little underwhelming. Other than that, the preview that the trailer gave us was really amazing. The fashion, opulence and parties look fitting. And Araminta and Collin’s “Royal Wedding” gave me chills! Please, August, come sooner!
