Archivo 1984 To Screen Lino Brocka’s Neo-Noir “Jaguar”

By

The exclusive screening will feature never-before-seen production photos and welcome the presence of its lead stars, Philip Salvador and Amy Austria.

Lino Brocka, who stands as National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts and among the Philippines’s foremost auteurs, left the world with biting, unforgettable films that deftly explored politics and socioeconomic issues within the country that still echo today. And while the gritty urban drama Maynila, sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (Manila in the Claws of Light) is no doubt the most globally famous among his titles—due in large part to Martin Scorsese and World Cinema Project’s involvement in its remastering—other works like 1976’s quietly harrowing Insiang (the first Filipino film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival) and the 1979 neo-noir Jaguar (the first Filipino film to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival) also deserve credit as shining examples of great Philippine cinema.

This November 8, 2025 (Saturday), Archivo 1984 will be hosting an exclusive screening of the newly-restored, 4K version of Jaguar, in collaboration with Solar Films and the Philippine Film Archive (under the Film Development Council of the Philippines or FDCP).

About Jaguar (1979)

As with many of Brocka’s films, Jaguar’s protagonist lives in a state of deprivation, forced to take up the grueling job to make ends meet for his family, and confronting corruption and violence in the process.

That the film ever made it to the Cannes Film Festival is worth celebrating, as it was banned for export by the administration of then-president Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., but was eventually released after the festival pressured the government to do so. On top of direction by Lino Brocka, it features a screenplay by lauded Filipino writers Jose F. “Pete” Lacaba and Ricky Lee. The official blurb of Jaguar is as follows:

Poldo, a poor man, takes up a job as a security guard at a high-class apartment complex. However, he soon finds himself protecting his employer’s son from the violent attacks of a nightclub owner.

The exclusive screening will feature behind-the-scenes photos shown in public for the very first time. Lead actors Phillip Salvador and Amy Austria will also be gracing it with their presence.
