This self-portrait has experienced the reappraisal of a lifetime.
Max Beckmann’s self-portrait, which he made during World War II after fleeing Nazi Germany, has sold for a record 23.2 million euros.

This recorded the highest price ever sold for a painting auctioned in Germany.
Auction house Villa Grisebach estimated the artwork to sell for between 20 million to 30 million euros.
“Self-portrait in yellow-pink” dates back to 1943.
It marks Beckmann’s departure from his usual dark colors in favor of yellow fabric.
“With this result, Grisebach has set an international benchmark for the German art trade and once again made Berlin a venue for world-class auction results,” senior partner Bernd Schultz said.
