Roman Holiday (1953)

1953 was the year that Hollywood introduced us Audrey Hepburn. Throughout her career, she starred in a handful of wonderful romantic comedies such as Sabrina (1954) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), yet, nothing quite matches her Academy Award-winning turn in Roman Holiday. Hepburn plays Princess Anne, a royal from an unnnamed European country who, feeling overwhelmed from her duties, escapes to expereince Rome as an anonymous citizen. During her adventure of freedom, she meets the slick newspaper man Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who recognizes her but plays along with her charade to secure an exclusive story. Soon, deeper feelings begin to develop between the two. A timeless classic that is frequently featured on “Greatest of All Time Lists”, Roman Holiday is well-worth the watch this Valentine’s Day.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

10 Things I Hate About You brings William Shakespeare into the early Noughties. The film stars Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger in a loose adaptation of the iconic play The Taming of the Shrew. This time, however, the story is set in Padua High School. Stiles plays “the shrew”, an outspoken and headstrong teenager named Kat Stratford, who is deemed undateable by the student body. Her younger sister, Bianca, is more popular but isn’t allowed to date unless Kat does. Determined to change that, some boys at school conspire to set Kat up with the brooding outcast Patrick Verona (Ledger), hoping to make her more socially acceptable—thus allowing Bianca to date. The film perfectly captures the thrill of young love, the excitement of new relationships, and the highs and lows of high school, from navigating social circles to attending the first dance. Set to a stellar soundtrack of ’90s cult hits, the film will leave you giddy with nostalgia.

50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates is more than just a silly Adam Sandler comedy—it’s a heartfelt film that beautifully explores the complexities of unconditional love. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Another reinterpretation of a classic work is Bridget Jones’s Diary, an extremely loose retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, set in the bustling streets of London and centering around the titular Bridget Jones, a 30-something self-proclaimed mess who, on New Year’s Day, decides to take control of her life. However, her plans are thwarted when she falls for her boss, the charming but slimy book editor Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). Things become even more complicated when Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), a lawyer she thought she hated, professes his love for her. The magic of Bridget Jones’s Diary lies in Renée Zellweger’s wonderful Oscar-nominated performance, as well as the clever writing, which, despite being over two decades old, remains hilarious, relevant, and absolutely relatable.
