Instituto Cervantes’ 24th Manila Spanish Film Festival Screening This October

PELÍCULA>PELIKULA returns to Makati from October 10 to 16, screening 20 acclaimed films for free.

Instituto Cervantes de Manila’s beloved PELÍCULA>PELIKULA Spanish Film Festival returns to Makati this October. Now in its 24th year, this cinematic celebration has become one of the Philippines’ most anticipated cultural events, with a vibrant showcase of Spanish, Latin American, and Filipino storytelling.

What’s Showing?

This year’s festival brings over 20 acclaimed films spanning multiple genres and cultures. Spanish cinema takes center stage with compelling dramas like Goya Award Best Picture winner El 47, Soy Nevenka, and Nosotros, while documentary lovers can explore Un hombre libre and the fascinating La guitarra flamenca de Yerai Cortés. Animation fans won’t be disappointed with Mariposas negras and Robotia, perfect for family viewing. Additional films showing include Dalia y el libro rojo, Tasio, Solos en la noche, and Reinas.

The festival opens with El 47, a historical drama that tells the story of a bus driver’s act of peaceful protest to bring public transport to his neglected Barcelona neighborhood. The film won five awards at the 39th Goya Awards, including Best Picture.

The Latin American selection promises equally captivating stories, featuring Argentina’s Por tu bien, Brazil’s Até que a música pare, Uruguay’s Becho, and Peru’s Reinas. Filipino cinema joins the celebration through “En corto,” a special program showcasing recent short films, including Lip Sync Assassin, Animal Lovers, and Radikals, with directors presenting their work.

Where And When Can I Watch?

The festival opens on October 10 with El 47 at Ayala Triangle Gardens.

Other special activities include a Cine Maratón on October 11, running from 11:45 AM to 11:00 PM. For children, there will be film-related activities held on October 11, as well as games before the October 12 screening of Robotia where they will get a chance to win footballs and an official Real Madrid jersey signed by football legend Emilio Butragueño. On October 16, “Encuentros en el cine: En corto” features Filipino directors Jon Galvez, Aedrian Araojo, and Arvin Belarmino as they present their short films.

Don’t miss the chance to vote for the Audience Choice Award, a cherished tradition since 2004, where viewers decide their favorite film, with the winner receiving a special closing night screening on October 16.

All screenings are free and include English subtitles, making this cultural feast accessible to everyone.
