The law defines a National Cultural Treasure as “a unique object found locally, possessing outstanding historical, cultural, artistic and/or scientific value, which is significant to this country and nation.”

By law, the state must preserve and protect properties listed as National Cultural Treasures.

As an architectural symbol, the building houses some of the most important art pieces in the Philippines. In fact, four of the center’s artworks are now also National Cultural Treasures alongside the PICC.

The official public declaration of the PICC and its artworks as a National Cultural Treasure took place on September 27. Filipino National Artist Leandro V. Locsin designed the center, which formally opened on September 5, 1976.

“The architectural marvel houses the works of various Filipino master artists in painting and sculpture. [It] is even regarded as a work of art in itself. One of the country’s prime examples of brutalist architecture,” the PICC website reads.
