Oprah Winfrey’s book with Dr. Bruce Perry has sold a million copies and the author says that she hopes the book will help us shift our paradigm of “what’s wrong” to “what happened?”
The book is described as “conversations on trauma, resilience, and healing.” In an Instagram post, Oprah Winfrey shares, “I just got the news that #WhatHappenedToYou, my book with Dr. Bruce Perry, has sold a million copies.”
She continues, “I’ve learned that understanding what happened to you and those you love is vital to moving past old hurts and stepping in to a better life. When I look back at my young girl self, I marvel at the dream God had for me. It exceeded any dream I could imagine. Thank you to everyone who bought the book or listened to the audio. I hope it helps you shift your paradigm of what’s wrong with me/him/her/them to what happened?”
In a previous post on Instagram, Winfrey thanked those who had bought the book: “A year ago, I released #WhatHappenedToYou with Dr. Bruce Perry. Our hope was that the book would help people heal from their childhood traumas and shift the question from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” What actually ended up happening was far greater than this little girl born in Kosciusko, Mississippi—and everything she went through—could’ve ever dreamed of. Not only did it spend one full year on the @nytimes bestseller list, but it connected with so many of you. Thank you to everyone who bought the book. I’m especially grateful to all of you who connected and made your own discoveries.
While referring to her childhood photo posted on Instagram, Winfrey also said, “I could weep thinking that if this little girl knew that one day, everything that happened to her, and her healing, would help others find their own path.

What I know for sure is that everything that has happened to you was also happening for you. And in all of those moments, you were building strength. Strength times strength times strength equals power. What happened to you can also be your power.
