Elton John’s art collection
The three-set artwork by Banksy realized $1,925,500 as displayed in Christie’s website. Its estimate cost between $1 million to $1.5 million. It depicted a man who is on the verge of throwing flowers, symbolizing peace.
John’s pieces from Keith Haring also impressed as winning bidders offered to purchase them for more than their valued cost. Both untitled art works from the artist cost $756,000 and $529,200, with estimates between $200,000 to $500,000.
1990 Bentley Continental
John’s 1990 Bentley is part of the “Goodbye Peachtree Road” auction. According to Christie’s website, the singer said the car’s beauty left him mesmerized and thought its walnut interiors were sexy. He first rode the car in Los Angeles. “There is no place better in California to drive a convertible sedan with the roof down and the sea air gently blowing in your face,” the lot essay mentioned.
The 1990 Bentley Continental sold for $441,000. A buyer on a phone bidded on the lot, against its low estimated value between $25,000 to $35,000.
Exquisite timepieces
John acquired a considerable amount of valuable timepieces, which he included in the “Goodbye Peachtree Road” auction. Among these are his Cartier timepieces: one rare 18k gold limited edition asymmetrical wristwatch with ‘crash’ deployant clasp; one 18k white gold and baguette diamond-set watch with a sapphire-set dial; and a platinum, ruby and diamond-set watch.
John’s asymmetrical watch sold for $277,200, exceeding its estimated value between $70,000 to $100,000. The platinum, ruby, and diamond-set watch sold for $214,200, more than its estimate of $15,000 to $25,000. Meanwhile, his watch with diamonds and a sapphire-set dial made $176,400, more than its estimate between $20,000 to $30,000.
A sapphire ring from Cartier
Another Cartier piece proved to be one of the lot’s exceptional purchases as a sapphire ring John owned sold for $132,300. This is higher than its approximate value between $50,000 to $80,000.
It is a ring with a heart mixed-cut sapphire set in 18k yellow gold.
John’s platform leather boots
A pair of silver leather platform boots that John wore in multiple performances in the 1970s sold for $94,500 as per Christie’s website. It had red letters E and J to the sides with red and white stripes. Its approximated value is between $5,000 to $10,000.
Total earnings from all lots to follow
Christie’s Americas Deputy Chairman Tash Perrin said it was a privilege to auction off John’s inspiring collection. Perrin expressed the team was thrilled about the top lot, Banksy’s triptych, which “exceeded the highest estimate.”
The auction company stated on their website that the final total for the collection will follow once all sales have closed.
