The Price of Prestige: The Dalmore 62 Makes History at Auction

The Dalmore 62 makes history by becoming the most expensive bottles of Dalmore ever sold in an auction

Set at the “Sotheby’s Distilled: Iconic Samaroli, Dalmore 62 and The World’s Oldest Cognac” in London, two bottles of The Dalmore were sold at £266,200 apiece, with each one netting a total of 26 bids. The iconic whiskey brand proves yet again, that those with refined taste trust the brand’s expertise in producing well-made spirits and indicative of the increasing value and demand for the product. Taking control of the cask maturation since the 1980s, Master Distiller Richard Paterson continues the legacy of its pioneers, the Mackenzie family. Having recognized the excellence and elegance of the collection, he embarked on a mission to source premium Sherry casks to nurture the spirit to fruition.

“I’ve been fortunate to care for the wealth of rare and aged whiskeys at our highland distillery since 1970, and this exceptional expression is very special to me indeed. When I took control of these precious casks some 50 years ago, I was aware of their true value, not so much in monetary terms but as a living part of the distillery’s heritage that marks our lifelong commitment to creating whiskey like no other,” explains international whiskey expert and master distiller Richard Paterson.

A respected virtuoso in the field of cask curation, Richard fashioned the perfect environment for the creation of this rare and exquisite masterpiece. As a final flourish, a small-sized, bespoke handcrafted cask seasoned with Gonzales Byass Matusalem Oloroso 30 Year Old Sherry encased the prized concoction.

“Only 12 bottles of The Dalmore Aged 62 Years were created, each individually named, hand signed, and numbered, but all containing whiskeys dating from 1868, 1878, 1928, and 1939. Whether these bottles end up enjoyed or collected, I hope that the lucky buyers savor this special piece of history,” Richard adds. Since its maiden debut in 2002, whiskey connoisseurs and experts have only been given two opportunities to bid for the prestige of owning a rare bottle of The Dalmore 62. And with the appearance of these two prestigious bottles in a single auction, the collectors were more than elated to participate in the unique opportunity.

“We were fortunate to see two bottles of this incredibly rare expression available at the same time. The investment value The Dalmore commands at auction is reflective of the rarity of the whiskey itself, and the continued strength of the investment market driven by Asia. At a time where investors are increasingly considered in their investment choices, Single Malt Scotch Whisky is now rightly considered as an investment choice. At the same time, we are fortunate to have a product that has been carefully crafted in Scotland for 180 years, and that continued pursuit of the perfect whiskey is what drives demand from whiskey investors,” expresses Gerry Tosh, Rare Whisky Director.
