Die-Hard Fans: HBO Is Releasing a Documentary About the Media’s Obsession With Princess Diana—Using Only Archival Footage

By

The film directed by Academy Award-nominee Ed Perkins releases on August 13.

Although it’s been 25 years since her tragic death, yet another documentary on Princess Diana will be released. In 2017, the year of her 20th death anniversary Diana: In Her Own WordsThe Story of Diana, and The Royal House of Windsor premiered.

Of course, there were dramatizations of the Princess’ life like last year’s Spencer (Kristen Stewart), The Crown (Emma Corrin), Broadway musical Diana (Jeanna de Waal), and Princess in Love (Julie Cox), to name a few.

With that said, the new documentary by HBO revolves around the media’s obsession with the late royal.

Directed by Academy Award-nominee Ed Perkins, it will tell the story of Diana’s entrance into the British Royal Family. From her budding romance with Prince Charles to the birth of her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry—to her death.

According to Town & Country, the entire film will be told through archival footage without talking heads or interviews with friends and family. In line with the theme, the clips seem sourced from British and possibly global media, as seen in The Princess’ trailer.

The Princess premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 13, 2022.
