A Brief History of Oktoberfest
Today, Oktoberfest in Munich draws millions of visitors from around the world each year. What we now know as a lively carnival of food, beer, and music actually began as a royal celebration. According to Oktoberfest.de, the festival’s roots go all the way back to 1810, when Andreas Michael Dall’Armi, a member of the Bavarian National Guard, proposed a public celebration for the royal wedding of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The couple wed on October 12, 1810, with five days of festivities in Munich’s city center, capped off by a grand horse race on October 17.
There may not have been a royal wedding every year, but Oktoberfest continued to evolve and endure throughout history. While wars, pandemics, and political upheavals have interrupted it, the spirit of celebration never faded. Over time, as Germany and its people found new reasons to raise a glass, it only grew bigger and bolder. However, it was in 1910, during the festival’s 100th anniversary, where Oktoberfest became what we know and love today. At that year’s celebration, a record-breaking 12,000 hectoliters of beer was served and consumed.

In the Philippines, German Club Manila—which was founded in 1886—has kept the Oktoberfest spirit alive since its very first celebration in 1930, which drew a crowd of around 800 people. Since then, the festival has grown year after year, introducing generations of Filipinos to German culture, incredible cuisine, and of course, world-class beer. This year, Oktoberfest 2025 at Solaire Resort Entertainment City is set to be the biggest one yet, with organizers expecting over 7,000 guests to join the three-day celebration.
What To Expect At This Year’s Celebration
For the first time ever in the Philippines, Oktoberfest 2025 will feature beer from Hofbräu München, one of Germany’s most iconic breweries. Founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria, the Hofbräuhaus was originally established to supply the royal court with its own exclusive brown beer. More than 500 years later, Hofbräu endures as a symbol of the finest Bavarian beer and cuisine, and it’s now the official drink of the upcoming Manila festivities.

And what’s an Oktoberfest celebration without delicious German cuisine? What we like to call “Oktoberfest Core” means long tables draped in blue-and-white checkered sheets, overflowing with family-style servings of sausages, meat, pretzels, beer, confections, sauerkraut, cheeses, and an array of cold cuts. Expect all this and more at the upcoming event at Solaire.
During the recent press conference, Lifestyle Asia got a delicious preview of what’s to come. German breads and Bavarian-style soft pretzels hit the spot, perfectly paired with a selection of Wiesenjause (German cold cuts and cheese) and Räucherlachs (smoked salmon). And let’s not forget the bratwurst—which, if you ask me, always steals the show at any Oktoberfest party. How can you go wrong with Munich-style poached veal and pork sausage, especially when served with classic German potato salad and sauerkraut on the side?

The main courses had us absolutely salivating. The Germans know their meat, so are you really surprised we indulged in everything from crispy pork knuckle and pork schnitzel to meatloaf, rotisserie chicken, Rindsgulasch (beef goulash), and braised beef ragout? Paired with cold Hofbräu München beer, every bite was a thrill for the palate. And to wrap it all up? A lineup of classic German desserts like apple strudel, Kaiserschmarrn (shredded caramelized pancake), and the ever-popular Black Forest cake.

Beyond the delicious cuisine and a night filled with beer, Oktoberfest 2025 has plenty more in store. Expect fun games, raffles, exciting prizes, and lively musical performances from the Bavarian Sound Express—plus a special appearance by Filipino music icon Martin Nievera.
