Before the year ends, 2024 lives up to its name as a year full of surprises. Recently in the fashion industry, the entrance and exit of creative directors have filled new columns. Here are some of the creative director movements you might have missed recently.
Acknowledging Innovations
Chanel is a fashion house that epitomizes prestige and class. Recently, Matthieu Blazy was announced as the French fashion house’s fourth creative director. Before him, there was Virginie Viard, Karl Lagerfeld, and the founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.

Before joining Chanel, Matthieu was the creative director of the Italian brand Bottega Veneta. He spearheaded the resurgence of the brand as he created iconic “it” bags and trompe-l’œil looks in every collection. Moreover, his brilliance in creating innovative designs and creations is what Chanel needs to further renew the public’s interest in the brand.
In a recent Instagram post, the newly appointed creative director wrote, “I am thrilled and honoured to join the wonderful House of Chanel, I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together. Many thanks to Alain Wertheimer, Leena Nair, and Bruno Pavlovsky for their trust.”
Creative Leadership
For Givenchy, the appointment of Sarah Burton as the new creative director is an exciting opportunity for the brand. “It is a great honor to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel. I am so excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility, and beliefs,” she said.

Before holding the creative reins of Givenchy, Sarah used to be the creative director of Alexander McQueen. She worked under the designer and eventually took over when McQueen passed away. Her design philosophy perfectly complements the eccentric codes of the French fashion house.
Woman Led
As Matthieu Blazy assumed the role of creative director for Chanel, Bottega Veneta appointed Louise Trotter as its new creative head. “I am pleased to welcome Louise as our new creative director. Her aesthetic seamlessly combines exquisite design with sublime craft and her commitment to cultural advocacy aligns beautifully with our brand vision…,” Leo Rongone, CEO of Bottega Veneta, said.

Louise is known for the revival of the French heritage brand, Carven. Her unique approach to minimalism and her keen eye for craftsmanship makes her a perfect match for Bottega Veneta.
Sweet Farewell
They say all good things come to an end. For Maison Margiela, John Galliano’s reign as its creative director has now ended. In an emotional Instagram post, Galliano talked about his legacy, rediscovering his voice, and being sober for 14 years. Furthermore, he thanked the fashion house and his team for allowing him to create amazing and iconic looks for the brand. His legacy will be an unforgettable piece of tapestry in Maison Margiella’s history.
