Full Circle Moment: Jared Leto Will Portray Karl Lagerfeld In Upcoming Biopic - Arts & Culture

Upon meeting for the first time, the late designer gave Leto approval.

After playing Paolo Gucci in last year’s House of Gucci, Jared Leto is on to portray another force in fashion history. Last week, the Academy Awards winner was announced to play Karl Lagerfeld in an upcoming biopic.

In fact, Leto has received approval from the designer himself. Before Lagerfeld’s passing in February 2019 due to pancreatic cancer, Leto shared their exchange upon meeting for the first time. “You know, one day I have to play you in a movie,” Leto told the designer. Approvingly, Lagerfeld responded, “Only you, darling, only you.”

Coming together

Leto told the story in an exclusive interview with WWD, while he described the upcoming role as a “full circle moment.” The Suicide Squad actor continues, “Karl would be proud of what we are doing.”

The film will be produced by Emma Ludbrook’s production company, Paradox, in partnership with Lagerfeld’s estate. His close friends and colleagues Pier Paolo Righi, Caroline Lebar, and Sebastien Jondeau have been tapped to consult for the film.

“Karl has always been an inspiration to me. He was a true polymath, an artist, an innovator, a leader, and, most importantly, a kind man. When we came together with the Karl Lagerfeld team, we immediately shared a creative vision of doing a respectful ode to Karl while pushing the artistic boundaries of what a biopic can be,” Leto added.

Today, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its 2023 exhibition will examine the work of the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. It will showcase the former Chanel creative director’s design process, with approximately 150 pieces accompanied by sketches.
