On Giving Luxury Watches This Holiday Season

Timepieces are a classically beautiful and functional accessory. Here’s how to gift the perfect piece for your loved one.

Watches are probably the most practical luxury accessory you can give anyone. Not only do they serve a functional purpose by telling time, they can also elevate any look.

The best luxury watches are both beautiful and durable. They can last long even when worn every day. Some brands and models can even go up in value over time, making them a practical investment. If not, you can still turn them into family heirlooms and pass them down to the next generations.

How to pick the best piece

Chris Rovzar, editor of Bloomberg Pursuits, advises that unless you’re shopping for the watch with your loved one, it’s better to go with a more classic-looking piece.

After interviewing a couple of experts, he found all three saying that when buying a watch as a gift, start by imagining that person’s style and what else they enjoy. That can help a salesperson find what you’re looking for.

“It’s a curation process,” watch collector James Eton told GQ magazine. “Consider how the recipient perceives the brand? If you’re dealing with someone who won’t give you any direction, the safest option is to go internally.”

“Do as much research as possible about what they like. Visit some watch boutiques with them under the guise of trying on watches for yourself, but encourage them to try some on as well,” Watch Concierge Services owner Samantha Haizelden advised.

“Pay attention to the timepiece’s size, dial color, or strap. These would be critical features to match their daily routine,” Balazs Ferenczi, editor of Fratello Watches, also told GQ.

As the market for luxury watches is loosening, it could be easier to find the Rolexes and Patek Philippes that had long waitlists earlier this year. At the same time, December is a busy month for most retailers, so there could still be many hard-to-find pieces.

After all, brands like Cartier and TAG Heuer are definitely getting into the holiday spirit, as seen on their social media pages. Cartier has been promoting the Baignoire bangle watch against a snowy backdrop. Meanwhile, TAG Heuer’s Carrera Chronosprint Gold participates in a festive race with a couple of merry elves.

Tudor has also recently released a new version of its Black Bay line. Made of steel with a fixed bezel, the Black Bay 31/36/39/41 models embrace a sophisticated, versatile, and unisex chic aesthetic.

As long as you’ve put ample thought into it, gifting a luxury watch is a sure symbol of your appreciation and love for that special person. One that will last for years to come.
