Prior to 2009, these three awards were presented during the main Academy Awards ceremony. Now for 15 years, the recipients are honored at their own dinner gala. Highlights from the event are then incorporated into the year’s Academy Awards show.

Through the years, the gala has grown into a major red carpet and film industry event. Here are just some of the most stunning looks from the 15th ceremony and its deserving honorees.

Jennifer Lawrence showed off her baby bump in a gorgeous custom Bottega Veneta gown. She paired her brown bodycon dress with gold accents like the Ana Khouri jewelry and woven Bottega clutch.

Lupita Nyong’o went for a black and gold ensemble from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2023 Couture collection. The first layer of the dress is decorated with gold sequins shaped like various animals and over it is a shapeless lace layer with a pattern of silver circles. Nyong’o wore her hair in a swirling updo, enhanced with hand-woven yarn.

Angelina Jolie attended the event with one of her children, Knox Jolie-Pitt. In a unique pick, Jolie wore a no label vintage gown sourced by The Kit Vintage. According to the luxury vintage boutique, the actor often shops with them on her own and that she is “very present, engaged, and chooses each piece.”

A red carpet darling, Elle Fanning donned a Valentino Spring/Summer 2025 sheer gown and cape, embellished with clear crystals, silver jewels, and a fur trim. Her Cartier diamond necklace also matched the light green hue of her ensemble.

Selena Gomez attended the Governors Awards in a custom black velvet Ralph Lauren gown. Inspired by the classic tuxedo, the dress was embellished with over 70,000 crystals and finished with traditional French cuffs. To finish up the look, Gomez wore Boucheron pendant earrings and rings.

Acclaimed Honorees

This year’s Honorary Oscar Award recipients are Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor. Quincy was a 28-time Grammy Award-winning record producer, composer, and jazz artist. Meanwhile, Taylor is an award-winning casting director who has worked on over 100 films.

Quincy passed away just two weeks prior to the Governors Awards, having been in the middle of writing the speech he intended to give at the ceremony. Instead, his actor daughter Rashida Jones delivered her father’s message on his behalf.

“As a teenager growing up in Seattle, I would sit for hours in the theater and dream about composing for films,” she said, memorizing her father’s words. “When I was a young film composer, you didn’t even see faces of color working in the studio commissaries. I am so, so proud of the fact that my name and contributions can be included in that evolution.”

Taylor, who was introduced and honored by Nicole Kidman, is known for casting dozens of Woody Allen films and she is only the second person of her profession to receive the recognition.

James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, paid tribute to siblings Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson who produced the 007 film franchise. They received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, which is given to creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production.

Lastly, Hugh Grant honored Richard Curtis with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The filmmaker is known for his romantic comedies, many of them starring Grant such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Love Actually

The award he received was on behalf of his outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, having founded charities and organizations such as Comic Relief and Make Poverty History.
