Singapore Bakery Brings Its French Delights To Manila

A beloved Singapore bakery arrives in Manila offering the very same freshly-baked goods that earned it a cult following among locals and travelers alike.

Tiong Bahru Bakery has become a quintessential part of the Singapore travel experience since its establishment in 2012. One will often find both locals and tourists flocking to its 21 growing outlets across the country, indulging in their baked goods or taking home boxes of them for loved ones. Now, Filipinos need not travel far to get a taste of its famous treats: Tiong Bahru Bakery has landed in Manila, marking its first venture not only in the Philippines, but outside of Singapore as a whole.

The bakery’s general manager Matt McLaughlan tells Lifestyle Asia that the choice was an easy one, given the promising market in the country: Filipinos have been longtime customers in the various Singapore branches and undeniably enjoy a good meal.

The new space located at the Verve Residences Tower 2 at Bonifacio Global City is an inviting one, clearly designed to foster an atmosphere for gatherings of all kinds. A glass display showcases its array of baked goods, while a window by the kitchen allows guests to watch bakers in action, batches of golden breads and pastries laid out in trays.

Fresh French

Tiong Bahru Bakery’s commitment to quality can be seen in its keen attention to detail, especially in regard to ingredients and baking processes. The establishment uses butter, milk, and flour imported from France alongside classic French baking techniques, all under the careful guidance of Chef Jean Marc Bernellin.

The results are delicate baked goods that actually taste as good as they look. Their signature, best-selling croissants are generous, layered structures with light flaky crusts and a fluffy, buttery inside when pulled apart. They are best enjoyed one small piece at a time, dipped in a hot cup of coffee. Each batch of croissants are baked every two hours, guaranteeing freshness regardless of what time you decide to stop by and grab a bite.

Other beloved signatures include the bakery’s sweet Kouign Amann (a layered butter pastry encrusted in caramelized sugar), and the Pain Au Chocolat (another type of layered butter pastry stuffed with premium dark chocolate).

There is plenty more to look forward to trying in every visit, including the bakery’s croissant sandwiches and quiches (which feature commendable crusts that are not too thin or thick, nor overly crumbly).

Now Brewing

Tiong Bahru Bakery has no shortage of beverages to pair with your food. Diners are spoilt for choice with well-brewed coffee in all its picturesque forms, as well as delicious teas like the Hojicha Latte, TBB Teh Tarik (a hot milk tea beverage popular across Southeast Asia), and classic British Breakfast tea.
