In Constant Evolution: 2022 Celebrates 50 Years of the Mah Jong Sofa - Luxe Living

Setting the standard for modularity and creativity for five decades, the Mah Jong has been dressed in fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Missoni Home.

It was painter, sculptor, and designer Hans Hopfer who created the Mah Jong, a modular sofa based on total freedom of form and function.

With three basic elements which can be combined or stacked together, the Mah Jong allows limitless options of composition from basic to complex. In a press release the brand says, “It allows for all positions and uses, reflecting the enthusiasm and vitality of the era from where it hails.”

Roche Bobois celebrates 50 years of the Mah Jong sofa. The anniversary celebration is an ode to ultra-modularity the sofa has embodied to offer complete freedom of form and function while paying homage to two talented men, designer Hopfer and Philippe Roche, co-founder of Roche Bobois and visionary entrepreneur.

According to the brand, “together they made the Mah Jong a resounding success: avante garde at the time of its creation, the sofa is an iconic piece today.” It still sets the standard for modularity and creativity to this day, and has been dressed in fabrics designed by Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Missoni Home.
