Sister Jayanti is the Additional Administrative Head of the Brahma Kumaris (BK). She has dedicated over four decades to fostering peace and promoting spiritual values worldwide. Her extensive travels and insightful commentaries have made her a sought-after speaker and broadcaster. Sister Jayanti believes that the erosion of spiritual principles lies at the root of humanity’s current challenges.
Since 2009, she has represented the Brahma Kumaris at the United Nations Climate Change Conferences, emphasizing the importance of spiritual perspectives in addressing climate change. Her advocacy centers on the need to cultivate love and respect for oneself, all human beings, and all life forms. She contends that these spiritual values should form the bedrock of our existence.
The Brahma Kumaris, a global organization with over one million students in 110 countries, offers programs to empower individuals through meditation. Founded in India in 1937, the Brahma Kumaris is dedicated to personal transformation and world renewal.
My True Nature
In a recent address to leaders and creatives at the BK-sponsored “Inner Leadership” forum at Seda Residences Makati, Sister Jayanti emphasized the importance of self-realization. She explained that by understanding our true identity as souls, we can embark on a journey of personal growth and transformation.
“A deeper understanding of our spiritual nature empowers us to overcome challenges and create positive change,” she said. Meditation, she explained, is a powerful tool for accessing this inner strength. By cultivating a meditation practice, we can tap into our spiritual energy and allow it to influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions.
Asked to differentiate between prayer and meditation, Sister Jayanti explained that prayer often involves making requests to God. “Still, it is better to ask God than human beings,” she said.
Another level of prayer involves offering prayers for others and the world, rather than focusing on personal requests. Additionally, prayer can include reciting memorized or written texts composed by others. However, she emphasized that the highest form of prayer is silent communication with the Divine, which is the essence of meditation. “It’s about tuning into the frequency of the Divine through the power of thought,” she said.
Sister Jayanti clarified that God is a bodiless, pure Being of Light who hears, sees, and knows us as individuals. She emphasized that reaching God does not require rituals; it simply requires tuning our minds to the right frequency.
Meditation starts with us reconnecting with our essential nature as souls, revealing the profound truth that our true identity is one of peace.
“My present practice is not stopping thoughts but moving the energy of the mind in a specific direction. These thoughts are about the inner being, the soul: Who I am, my original qualities, and experience soul consciousness or awareness of the soul,” she said.
Cleansing The Soul
Sister Jayanti explained that the power of pure thought or soul consciousness can reach God, a bodiless, pure Being of Light. “Even though God has no physical form, He hears, sees, and knows me as an individual,” she said. “I don’t need rituals to connect with Him; I simply need to tune my mind to the right frequency.”
To establish a deeper connection with the Divine, we must cultivate a receptive state of consciousness. Meditation is a valuable practice for achieving this. By releasing distractions and focusing inward, we can discover our inner peace. From this centered state, we can then turn our attention toward the Divine and allow for a profound exchange of spiritual energy.
“When I detach from the awareness of the physical form and focus on my soul consciousness, I can connect with the Supreme Soul, who is also without a body,” Sister Jayanti explained. “I must let go of the consciousness of the body to reach this point of connection. First, I remove waste thoughts or malevolent thoughts. Then, I focus on the self, the being of light who is the source of positive attributes, and communicate through my thoughts with the Divine. Eventually, I reach a point where I don’t need to consciously have thoughts anymore. The spaces between thoughts naturally become larger. This is the state of realization or experience that comes in. Meditation is this direct communication and connection—yoga. In this state, the soul is purified,” she concluded.
Royal Yoga
Sister Jayanti explained that this practice is known as raja yoga meditation, which means “royal yoga” or “highest yoga.” The goal of raja yoga is to transform the human spirit through a connection with the Supreme Being.
“This is the foundation of my faith that we have a better world ahead,” she said. “I believe this is the next step in human evolution: for individuals to understand and practice this connection and relationship in a living way. The practical steps involve studying these ideas about the soul, God, and meditation, and practicing them regularly. Even as I speak, I’m aware that it’s my inner being, the soul, speaking. The more I practice throughout the day, whether I’m walking, talking, or doing other tasks, and whenever I have the opportunity to be quiet and reflect, the easier it becomes to make this connection. I’m able to detach from all other things. It’s the practice of soul consciousness.”
For those new to meditation, Sister Jayanti recommended checking out the Just-A-Minute Meditations website or downloading the app which offers 60-second meditation commentaries. “It’s a great resource for everyone,” she said. “Even one minute of peace can have a positive impact for several minutes afterward. But five minutes of meditation can definitely make the next 55 minutes more pleasant and sweeter.”
