LA Asks: What’s Your Favorite Memory With Dad?

Patty Ang, Lyndon Cayco, Jacqueline Morales, and Attorney Joel Nuñez talk about the cherished experiences they shared with their dads, and the valuable lessons they’ve learned from them.

No two fathers are alike, as each one has their own parenting style and love language. Yet what all good dads have in common is the strong love they hold for their children, one that manifests through things like sage advice, thoughtful conversations, jokes, and simple moral support.

This June, Lifestyle Asia asked four individuals to share their most cherished memories involving their fathers, as well as pieces of advice from them that they hold near and dear to their hearts. Whether one’s dad is alive or has sadly passed on, one thing remains certain: fatherhood changes both parent and child, leaving them with priceless, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that they will never forget.

What’s your favorite memory with your father and why?

I had a fashion show and my dad attended despite his busy schedule; he even took photos of me. It was just a simple father-daughter moment, but it made me really feel that he was proud of me.

What’s one thing that your father has taught you that you value most in your life?

Humility: no matter how successful [you are], how much you have attained in life, it is valuable to stay humble.

What’s your favorite memory with your father and why?

The E.T. story: I was given a toy by my Dad when I was seven years old. He passed away when I was nine. It was very memorable because apart from E.T. being my favorite character, I really didn’t like taking naps after lunch, but he said that if I did it, E.T. will be there to wake me up…and it happened [heart-eye emoji].

What’s one thing that your father has taught you that you value most in your life?

Just like when E.T. was biking right beside the moon, he reminded me to not be afraid to chase my dreams and remember there are still obstacles along the way…my father taught me to always follow my heart and be kind to other people.

What’s your favorite memory with your father and why?

My favorite memory with my father is our heartfelt reunion in June 2023. We hadn’t seen each other for eight long years, and his visit to Toronto was nothing short of transformative. We filled our days with activities—bowling, visiting Niagara Falls, meeting my friends, dining at wonderful restaurants, and exploring Toronto Island. Yet, the most poignant moment came when he was leaving. As he prepared to go, I was overwhelmed by a wave of emotions and gratitude that I hadn’t anticipated. The time we spent together was a beautiful reminder of the bond we shared, one that had been strained but not broken. It opened up a space for healing and a deeper understanding between us.

I realized just how much I had missed him, and the departure was a testament to the power of our renewed connection. This reunion was not merely about seeing each other again; it was about rediscovering and rebuilding our relationship. The experience taught me the importance of forgiveness, the beauty of second chances, and the enduring strength of family ties. Our relationship, though unconventional, is something I cherish deeply, for it has shown me the profound impact of love and reconciliation.

What’s one thing that your father has taught you that you value most in your life?

One of the most invaluable lessons my father has imparted to me is the significance of self-love and the freedom to forge my own path. Since our reunion, our bond has grown stronger, and we now call each other frequently. He is always there when I need him, guiding me through cooking dishes via video calls and offering different perspectives when I seek advice.

His unwavering support and humor have been my anchors, providing comfort and light during my darkest hours. He has a unique way of showcasing his love and support through silly references and anecdotes that never fail to cheer me up. Reflecting on our childhood, he was always the funny dad, making our visits fun with games, city outings, and thoughtful presents. Despite living with our mom and seeing him intermittently, he maintained his energy and humor.

Now, as an adult, I see how his teachings about self-love and living authentically have profoundly shaped my life. He has taught me to prioritize my own fulfillment and to live a life true to myself, not bound by the expectations of others. I hope he remains a constant presence in my life, as I’ve come to deeply understand that life is fleeting. I wish for us to continue our frequent communication and to visit each other more often, not waiting another eight years. I hope he finds great joy and fulfillment with his family and life. And next time, I am determined to beat him in bowling—he got lucky the last time we played!

What’s your favorite memory with your father and why?

My dad was tough on me when I was young, and I resented him for it. Later, I realized that he did this to teach me independence and strength. I am who I am today because of the many life lessons my dad taught me.

What’s one thing that your father has taught you that you value most in your life?

Not to take a “no” so easily. If you’re given a “no,” find a way to get a yes. I’ve used this in many ways as a lawyer and as an everyday person.
