After its mid-year auction last month, León Gallery once again presents its treasured pieces at the online auction this July 20-21. Among the highlights of the auction include a Mikimoto mini tiara and the sterling silver glassware of President Manuel L. Quezon. A visual feast and multitude of stories await collectors of antique furniture and prized possessions in the leading gallery’s latest auction.
Being part of a legacy
Auctions are typically held at physical locations but Leòn Gallery came up with the idea to do it online. Leòn Gallery Director Jaime Ponce de Leon shares, “The online auction gives clients the convenience of bidding through their mobiles, tablets or laptops, without having to trek all the way to where physical auctions happen.” It may differ from the common practice yet the charm in auctions is not lost.
Among the prized possessions is the sterling silver set of President Manuel L. Quezon is an elegant addition. The set is originally from the dining room of Quezon’s residence. The Quezon City government reconstructed the home and is now called Quezon Heritage House. The glassware sets include claret cups, punch bowl goblets, and dessert bowls. At formal gatherings in pre-war years, the Quezon family used this set of silver. Each of the pieces has the monogram “MLQ” or the initials of the president. This detail authenticates the antique tableware, passing on the identity of a powerful and wealthy family.
1970 Miss International Aurora Pijuan’s mini pearl tiara is another highlight of the auction. Mikimoto, the Tokyo-based jewelry company, handcrafted the exquisite tiara. The iconic gold crown encrusted with cultured pearls is a stunning addition to a jewelry collection. The proceeds will go to the Gem-Ver fishermen whose boat sank from the collision with a Chinese vessel.
Treasured possessions
Apart from the tiara and monogrammed glassware, there are paintings, antique decor, and furniture to expect at the auction. There are paintings of National Artist Jose Joya, Macario Vitalis, and Fernando Zobel. There are early Filipino furniture, books, and Chinese ceramics on auction as well to add to a growing antique collection. For those seeking unique and contemporary pieces, there is the painting of Andres Barrioquinto and resin of Iya Consorio. These two celebrate the eccentric or absurd through mesmerizing artworks.
