The late comedienne’s sprawling Upper East condo has several fireplaces, parquet-de-Versailles flooring, corner offices, a view of Central Park, and a ghost named Mrs. Spencer.

A few days ago, a luxury condo once owned by the late comedienne and host Joan Rivers went back on the market. Sporting a $38 million price tag, the 5,100-square-foot Manhattan property is an 11-room triple. Rivers lived at the penthouse for 25 years, up until her death in 2014.
Spirited away
Sitting on top of a 42-foot wide limestone-sheated mansion in New York’s East 62nd Street, the property had four bedrooms, four and a half baths, five fireplaces, and, according to Rivers, a ghost named Mrs. Spencer, who apparently disliked the home being worked on.
In 2009, the comedy legend shared in Celebrity Ghost Stories how the spirit was supposedly angry about what was being done to the house, spooked her dogs, left the space cold, and prevented the appliances from working.
After Rivers passed away in 2014 from Cardiac Arrest, Prince Muhammad bin Fahd bought the penthouse for $28 million and, dismissing its ghostly reputation, immediately planned on renovating. The Saudi royal is now placing it back on the market after six years.
Room with a view
The listing under licensed real estate broker Dolly Lenz and licensed real estate salesperson Jennifer Lenz describes the property as a spectacular terraced penthouse
“Steps from Fifth Avenue, the full service Pre-War Condominium was designed by renowned architect Horace Trumbauer in the neo-French Classic style,” the listing reads. “The 42-foot wide mansion is one of the few remaining examples of the architect’s ‘great houses’ in New York.”
An entry hall, which is accessible by private elevator, leads to a two-story gallery and an adjoining brightly-lit living room, which has a 23-foot ceiling and parquet-de-Versailles flooring.
“The original architectural detail was painstakingly restored by museum-trained artisans. A spacious corner paneled Library and a Formal Dining Room featuring ornate 18th century French panels, each include an original wood burning fireplace and overlook a sunny, south-facing terrace,” the listing continues in the textual walk-through.
The penthouse’s Master Bedroom, which has a corner office and a second full bathroom, overlooks has sweeping views of New York City and Central Park. There is also a library, a music room, and multiple terraces.
Downstairs, more sitting rooms are available. There, we imagine, Mrs. Spencer can now have spirited (pun intended) conversations with Rivers until a buyer finally snatches the property up.
