These armbands are making love, not war.
After FIFA banned “OneLove” armbands at the World Cup in Qatar, the accessory suddenly experienced a spike in sales.
These armbands represent solidarity against different forms of discrimination. After all, homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.
Previously, FIFA threatened multiple European team captains with yellow cards if they wore the armbands. This would represent their support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, plus (LGBTQIA+) community.
“The big boom came actually with the World Cup coming up and for sure the statement of FIFA to not allow these captain bands on the field, “said Badge Direct BV chief executive officer Roland Heerkens said.
The Netherlands-based company that makes the armbands announced that these have sold out after shipping 10,000 pieces. Most of these came from the past two weeks alone.
The “OneLove” bands originally came out in 2020 as part of the Royal Dutch Football Association’s inclusiveness campaign. These feature a heart-shaped rainbow flag with the number “one” in the middle.
