Masungi Georeserve calls to #FlipTheScript and #RewriteOurStory.
The Masungi Geopark Project has won the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) Action Award under the Inspire Category.
Masungi trustee Billie Dumaliang dedicated the award to their rangers and team during the September 27 ceremony in Bonn, Germany.
“You don’t know how much this means to us. At such a critical time when our work continues to be undermined and undersupported in our home country,” Dumaliang said.
The Masungi Georeserve is a conservation area and rock garden found in the rainforests of Rizal. Here, guests can commune with nature, wander through pathways, and encounter wildlife and plant species.
According to Masungi, quarrying companies with mineral production sharing agreements (MPSA) impose the biggest threat to its efforts. The sanctuary calls on the government to cancel the large-scale MPSAs covering more than 1,000 hectares of critical watershed and protected areas.
Meanwhile, the judges commended the project for being “bold enough to participate in national legislative inquiries and direct lobbying.”
