Listed for $7 million in July, the buyer is a fan of the composer, according to agent Michael Franco of Compass. The anonymous purchaser plans to make the historic home his new primary residence.
The townhouse, located in Turtle Bay, consists of 5,700-square-feet, five stories, and seven bedrooms. In the 1960s, Sondheim bought the home for himself. This was after he wrote the lyrics for West Side Story in 1957 and Gypsy in 1959.
Situated in Turtle Bay Gardens, the collection of 1860s townhomes share a communal garden. Sondheim’s chosen dwelling was also known for attracting artistic residents. In an interview with The Independent, Sondheim shared that Katharine Hepburn was one of his neighbors.
The home contains a music studio with a fireplace, a sunroom with the original stained glass windows, and a terrace that overlooks the garden. The primary suite spans the fourth floor. Meanwhile, the fifth floor may serve as an apartment for live-in staff.
According to Franco, Architectural Digest, The New York Post, Curbed, Elle Decor, and more featured the home the week it was up for sale.
