Cold winds and heavy rains are the norm at this season of the year. These times usually call for some nice warm home-cooked eats to balance out those chilly nights. A classic warm-you-up Filipino dish is monggo, with its hot thick broth that can soothe even the coldest of hearts. Sautéed Chorizo in Monggo
Add a deep savoriness to your classic monggo with juicy Macao chorizo sausage and plump shrimps. The thick flavorful broth from the monggo beans goes well with the meaty chew of the chorizo and shrimp. Ingredients:
250g | | | Monggo beans, boiled in 5-6 cups water, until soft |
1/2 cup | | | Pork liempo, diced |
1/2 cup | | | Fresh shrimp, shelled and deveined |
6 cloves | | | Garlic, crushed |
1 whole | | | Medium-sized onion, chopped |
1 tbsp | | | Ginger, julienned |
1/4 cup | | | Tomato, diced |
1 | | | Chorizong Macao |
2 bunches | | | Alugbati leaves |
1 pc | | | Knorr Pork Cube |
| | Patis, to taste |
Procedure:
- Fry diced pork in a little oil until brown and some of the fat has melted. Take out of pan and set aside.
- Sauté garlic in the pan until slightly brown. Put fried pork back in the pan. Add shrimp and sausage pieces and sauté together.
- Add ginger, onions and tomatoes. Add some patis (about 2 T). Sauté together.
- Add boiled monggo and its broth. You may add some water if desired. Cover and let mixture boil. Add alugbati leaves and Knorr Pork Cube. Boil for 2-3 minutes and turn off heat. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Monggo Rice with Malunggay and Smoked Fish
There’s nothing like a bowl of fried rice to warm you up on a chilly day. Adding some monggo creates a new texture that makes for an elevated home-cooked experience, and putting in smoked fish (tinapa) imbues this earthy taste that truly creates a one of a kind meal. Ingredients:
2 tsps | | | Canola oil |
1 tbsp | | | Onion, chopped |
1/2 tsp | | | Ginger, minced |
1 tsp | | | Garlic, minced |
1/4 cup | | | Fresh tomatoes, seeded and chopped |
1 pc | | | Knorr Pork Cube, crumbled |
1/4 cup | | | Cooked green beans (sitaw), chopped |
80 mL | | | Cooked monggo |
80 mL | | | Cooked brown rice |
1/4 cup | | | Tinapa flakes |
1/4 cup | | | Malunggay leaves |
| | Salt and pepper, to taste |
Procedure:
- In a non-stick pan, sautê the onion, ginger, and garlic in canola oil until fragrant. Add the tomatoes and cook until soft. Add the Knorr Pork Cube and mix well.
- Add the monggo, sitaw and brown rice. cook for 1 minute. Stir in the tinapa flakes and malunggay leaves. Cook until malunggay leaves turn bright green. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Monggo Pork ala Con Carne

Procedure:
- Heat the pan over medium heat. Pour oil and add the onions, garlic and ground pork. Sauté for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes, Knorr Pork Cubes, monggo, and tomato paste. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Season with paprika, chili powder, cayenne powder, chili flakes, salt, and pepper. Add 2 cups of water and simmer until the meat and vegetables are cooked.
- Top with cheddar cheese before serving.
