She’s nicknamed “Y,” which sums up our questions.
Canadian musician Grimes has revealed that she and Elon Musk, chief executive officer of SpaceX and Tesla, have secretly welcomed a second child through a surrogate in December 2021.
Their daughter’s name? Exa Dark Sideræl. Musk and Grimes, however, are calling her “Y” for short.
Previously, the couple polarized the world in May 2020 by revealing they named their first child X Æ A-12 (pronounced X Ash A Twelve).
Exa’s complete name derives from their mutual love for science and technology.
Here’s the breakdown of each name, as explained by Grimes herself in a cover interview with Vanity Fair.
Exa
Exa refers to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS.
This term is defined as the capability to perform one quintillion (exa) floating-point operations per second (FLOPS).
Dark
Dark, meanwhile, refers to dark matter and “the unknown.”
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration defines dark matter as stuff in space that has gravity but is unlike anything scientists have ever seen before. It comprises particles that do not absorb, reflect, or emit light, meaning they cannot be detected by observing electromagnetic radiation.
“People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,” Grimes said.
Sideræl
Lastly, Sideræl (pronounced sigh-deer-E-L) is a “more elven spelling” of sidereal, which means “of, relating to, or expressed in relation to stars or constellations.”
Grimes described this as “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time.”
