Princess Diana, a true fashion icon, continues to inspire style enthusiasts even after her untimely passing.
Now, one of her most famous outfits is making its way to the auction block at Sotheby’s, allowing fans to bid on a piece of her captivating legacy.
The garment in question is her renowned “Black Sheep” sweater, which she wore to one of Prince Charles’ polo matches back in 1981.
It symbolized her sense of alienation from the royal family, endearing her to her adoring fans.

Adored By Many
This iconic sweater was originally crafted by the knitwear label Warm & Wonderful and remained in circulation until 1994.
Diana adored it so much that when she discovered a tear in her personal sweater, she promptly reached out to the brand through her secretary to request a replacement.
Since then, the sweater has gained a cult following and now resides in the permanent collection of London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.
However, the original sweater worn by Princess Diana was believed to be lost until recently. In a stroke of luck, Osborne and Muir, the creators of Warm & Wonderful, stumbled upon it while rummaging through their attic.
Tucked away in a small box alongside a cotton bedspread, Diana’s original red sheep sweater from 1981 was found.
A Fashion Voyage
After almost four decades, this one-of-a-kind piece is ready to find its way into the hands of a fortunate collector.
The sweater will shine at Sotheby’s Fashion Icons sale, with an expected price range of $50,000 to $80,000 USD.
Online bidding opens from August 31 and runs until September 14, a day after the conclusion of New York Fashion Week.
The Whispers
Diana’s clothing choices have long been subject to speculation, with many pondering hidden meanings.
In the case of the “Black Sheep” sweater, it ignited speculation about the princess’s intricate relationship with the royal family.
Some interpret it as a reflection of her connection to the lone black sheep, while others see it as a tribute to Britain’s countryside and agricultural heritage.
Indelible Queen of Style
London’s Victoria and Albert Museum displays a replica of the sweater, while Warm & Wonderful revived production of the lone black sheep style in 2020.
The design is available for pre-order online at £250 ($295). Furthermore, the costume designers created an identical sweater for actor Emma Corrin, who portrayed Diana in the fourth season of the popular Netflix series The Crown, further emphasizing the enduring influence of Princess Diana’s fashion choices.
She continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts, embodying her unique style and symbolizing her remarkable journey.
As this cherished piece goes up for auction, it serves as a reminder of Diana’s indelible mark on the world of fashion and her enduring legacy as a beloved icon.
