The End Of A Chapter: Prelude To Being All-Electric

This British car company steers to a greener future with a 12-car collection that was crafted with historical significance in mind.

This is an excerpt from Lifestyle Asia’s May 2023 Issue.

Much like my dashed hopes of being James Bond, this magnificent vehicle will always be out of reach, if not for its price but for the fact that all 12 examples of this bespoke masterpiece are already allocated. In SPECTRE, James Bond and Madeleine Swann stood in the middle of a desert, Bond’s short burgundy tie and Swann’s flowy blouse dancing in the arid wind as they were approached by a dot in the distance. “That is a 1948 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith,” surveys Bond.

Rolls-Royce Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow collection

And so goes my first encounter with the Wraith line of Rolls-Royce.

This Black Badge Wraith Black Arrow collection will culminate our encounters with this historically powerful line of Rolls-Royce vehicles as this will be the last line of V12 coupes the marque will build before embarking on an all-electric future.

CAPTAIN GEORGE EYSTON ONCE SPED ON A SALT FLAT

I’m referring to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, on which Captain George Eyston set a world record land speed of 357.497 mp/h (575.335 km/h) in 1938. Across this dry, Hoth-like plane, Captain Eyston piloted the Thunderbolt, a seven-tonne, eight-wheeled monster fitted with two Rolls-Royce V12 ‘R’ Series aero engines. With its silver frame, Bond himself would’ve missed it and so as to make sure the timing equipment could measure the vehicle’s speed, a large black arrow was painted on the sides of the vehicle and a yellow central circle motif accent embellished the unit.

It’s this spirit of adventure and accomplishment that the designers at Goodwood, West Sussex, the only place in the world where these super-luxury motor cars are hand-built, created this powerful and dynamic collection.
