RuPaul

Even if you haven’t caught a single episode of the reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race, you undoubtedly recognize that name. RuPaul soared to global stardom back in the 90s as a drag queen, captivating audiences worldwide. 

On his show, he also played a vital role in educating the LGBTQ+ community and making it oh-so-fabulous!

Cher

Cher has been an absolute legend throughout her career. Her over-the-top fashion sense has served as a major inspiration for countless drag queens. But her involvement in the cause kicked into high gear when her son, Chaz, started his journey of transitioning from female to male. 

While Cher was not initially accustomed to the concept of the transgender identity, she did her best to understand and support her only child. 

“You have one child, but you don’t really lose them — they just are in a different shape,” she shared in a CNN interview with Christiane Amanpour.

No doubt about it, we’re talking about the Queen of Pop! She fearlessly shattered loads of taboos back in the late 80s and early 90s, bringing homosexuality front and center in her music videos and standing up for the LGBTQ+ community. She’s the ultimate queer idol, hands down!

Freddie Mercury

He rocked the world as the frontman of Queen and became a beloved gay icon, even though he never publicly discussed his sexual orientation. 

We all remember his powerful anthem “I Want to Break Free,” which still echoes today as a call for sexual freedom. Sadly, he passed away in 1991 from pneumonia complicated by HIV. 

He remains one of the most adored figures in the LGBTQ+ community.

The LGBTQ+ community adores a pop superstar who exudes sexuality and incredible dance moves. 

This particular diva has been a strong advocate for equal marriage and has generously backed campaigns for trans rights. 

We’ve all jammed out to the fabulous tunes of Beyoncé, which have provided the soundtrack to numerous memorable moments in our lives. Hits like “Crazy in Love,” “Irreplaceable,” and “XO” have made us feel like the reigning diva of the moment.

Lady Gaga

Gaga truly earned her status as a queer icon, thanks to her one-of-a-kind and boundary-pushing personality.

One of her undeniable anthems is “Born This Way,” a song that had many of us belting out the lyrics with immense pride in our sexual identities, it became a powerful anthem that resonated deeply within the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating our true selves and embracing who we are.
