Presence

Kicking off the list with an unsettling horror movie, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024. Now acquired by Neon for distribution, the film is set to be released on January 24, 2025.

Starring Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, Chris Sullivan, and Callina Liang, the movie follows a family who has just moved into a suburban house. Instead of a happy house warming, something doesn’t feel quite right.

Shot entirely in the first-person perspective, as seen in the trailer, we the audience immediately know that this family is not alone in their new home. What horrors await them? We just need to wait a little more to see.

Captain America: Brave New World

It’s been almost 10 years since we got a standalone Captain America movie, and this time Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is taking center stage. Formerly known as the flying superhero Falcon, Sam has taken up the mantle (or should we say the shield?) after the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, stepped down.

The film also stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, who inherits the Falcon’s name, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader, and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk.

While the upcoming movie is a continuation of the 2021 miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it features a new story and new characters. Captain America: Brave New World is set to premiere on February 14.

Mickey 17

Following his Oscar-winning 2019 film Parasite, Bong Joon-ho’s next project is finally coming soon. Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

Based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the film follows his character Mickey Barnes (Pattinson). Wanting to leave Earth, Mickey signs up to be an “expendable,” and gets to work in outer space. When he dies, a new body is regenerated for him with most of his memories still intact.

When the 17th Mickey unexpectedly survives, he has to go head to head with his latest iteration, Mickey 18. The science fiction black comedy film is scheduled to be theatrically released on March 7.

Black Bag

Starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, Black Bag follows two intelligence agents who are married to each other, trying to keep their work and private lives apart.

The couple’s marriage is put to the test when Blanchett’s character, Kathryn, is suspected of betraying the nation. Fassbender’s character, George, is forced to reevaluate his loyalty—to both his wife and his country.

The film, another one by director Steven Soderbergh and also featuring Regé-Jean Page, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke, and Pierce Brosnan, is set to come out on March 14.

28 Years Later

Eighteen years after the last installment, we’re finally revisiting the apocalyptic world of 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). When the trailer for 28 Years Later dropped, the only lines of dialogue came from a 1915 recording of actor Taylor Holmes reciting the Rudyard Kipling poem “Boots,” raising the eerie and tense atmosphere.

Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunited to create the highly anticipated third installment, enlisting actors Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Cillian Murphy.

Initially titled 28 Months Later, it was later changed, acknowledging the years it took to develop the film. 28 Years Later will finally be released on June 20.

Death of a Unicorn

A24’s upcoming release features a roster of stars including Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Will Poulter. Based on just the trailer, it looks like we’re in for a wild ride with Death of a Unicorn.

The story begins when Elliot (Rudd) and his daughter Ridley (Ortega) run over a unicorn on the way to a meeting with his boss. When his boss seizes the injured unicorn, his scientists discover the creature’s supernaturally curative properties.

Their celebration is cut short when another (bigger and much more terrifying) unicorn goes on a rampage within the estate. Written and directed by Alex Scharfman, the film is coming in Spring 2025.
