The Early Days

Beckham’s story began in 1991 when he joined Manchester United as a trainee.

His first taste of the spotlight came in 1996 when he scored a remarkable goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon.

It was around this time that his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, became aware of Beckham’s budding relationship with Spice Girls singer Victoria Adams.

Ferguson was slightly apprehensive about Beckham’s rising popularity and extravagant lifestyle.

“Getting the attention and becoming a celebrity was different to what I wanted,” Ferguson said.

“Getting David to keep his feet on the ground became more difficult.”

According to Beckham, Ferguson wanted him to be both an exceptional footballer and married to a local girl who wasn’t a celebrity.

Despite occasional disagreements, Beckham attributes much of his success to his family and Ferguson, whom he affectionately refers to as a “father figure.”

He reflected on the special bond they shared from a young age.

As a member of the “Class of ’92,” Beckham played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s historic treble-winning squad in 1999 and secured six Premier League titles.

Challenging Times

In July 2003, Beckham signed a £24.5 million deal with Real Madrid, marking the end of his stint with Manchester United.

His relationship with Ferguson had soured by then, and they never discussed the transfer—a fact Beckham is grateful for, as it would have been heart-wrenching.

Off the field, rumors swirled about an alleged affair between Beckham and his assistant, Rebecca Loos, though details remained vague.

Victoria Beckham revealed that during their time in Madrid, it felt like they were isolated from the world.

She expressed how challenging this period was for their relationship and her personally.

Beckham confessed to feeling lost after his move to Madrid, away from his family and the club he had been with since his youth.

While they never delved into specifics, the constant media scrutiny took a toll on their marriage.

Victoria admitted to resenting her husband for the overwhelming media circus that encircled their family, especially their children.

Reflecting on that period, Beckham said, “I don’t know how we got through it, honestly. Victoria means everything to me, and seeing her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters, and at that time, we needed to fight for each other and our family.”

The Love for the Game

Beckham’s retirement arrived sooner than expected.

He briefly joined French Ligue 1 side Paris St-Germain in January 2013 but found it physically demanding at the age of 38.

The pain and physical toll became overwhelming.

Four months later, he announced his retirement, describing his last professional game as a rollercoaster of emotions.

“I loved the game more than anyone has ever loved it,” he smiled. “I know it’s not true, but I think I loved it more than anyone.”
