The sights and sounds of New York City will be seen and heard on the Manila stage through the iconic musical West Side Story, which opens at Soloaire this coming August. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the 1957 Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim masterpiece changes its setting against the backdrop of gang warfare on the streets of the Big Apple. The Jets and the Sharks have been rival gangs for years, but what happens when Jets member Tony falls for Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo? An epic romance for the ages.

This production of the musical has toured worldwide and has garnered acclaimed reviews from Johannesburg, Sydney, Tokyo and London. The Manila arm will premiere at Solaire, and will run from August 1o to the 26th.

At the time of its original release on Broadway, the musical amassed rave reviews, particularly for its sweeping score and groundbreaking choreography. Adapted into a major motion picture in 1961, it would go on to win a record breaking 10 Academy Awards (including Best Picture), the most for a movie musical. This new production brings West Side Story into the new century, introducing the iconic tale to a whole new generation of theatergoers.
