Public opinion on Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has been quite negative since she wed Prince Harry last May. Rumors of her “diva tendencies” and her highly-publicized family drama has made her the subject of news outlets and tabloids all over the word. We’ve decided to list down a few things that Meghan has recently been criticized for, analyzing every point that may have led to people’s “negative feelings” towards the royal.

Duchess Difficult

Rumor has it that Markle is very difficult to work for, resulting to mass resignations within the royal household. Stories of nasty behavior and diva-tendencies have been circulating since she moved in with the Windsors. With 5 A.M. emails and “incessant streams of ideas”, it has been reported that her royal staff has given her the nickname “Duchess Difficult”. Although we will never know if this is actually true, another palace insider was quick to dismiss these rumors, telling Elle magazine, “She’s actually well-liked by her staff, and people are excited by her ideas and enthusiasm.”

The Letter

Yesterday, Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, leaked a handwritten letter from his daughter online. The Duchess of Sussex wrote that her “father was breaking her heart” and pleaded for him to “stop lying” and leaking stories about her to the press. It wasn’t long before handwriting expert, Emma Bache pointed out that her handwriting showed that the Duchess was a “showman and narcissist”. She went on to say that the five-page letter was written with a lot of “caution” and showed that the Duchess “liked the attention”. Many have criticized Markle’s highly dramatized writing (“Daddy, it is with a heavy heart that I write this…”). In addition, detractors have stated that Markle should have anticipated her father leaking the letter, due to their troubled history. Although not the first scandal in endless Markle Family Drama Saga, this particular news has caused quite a stir on the internet, backlashing on the Duchess, rather then her father.

Baby Bump Madness

Last October, Megan Markle announced that she was pregnant. Netizens were happy for her, and the people of England were excited to welcome a new addition into the royal family. Soon, public opinion on Markle changed, and her every move was scrutinized. One thing that ticked many off is Markle’s constant “womb cradling”. Since Markle’s appearance at the British Fashion Awards, internet trolls have consistently pointed out photographs of Markle holding her stomach, stating that “it’s too much”. Cosmopolitan UK tried to defend the Duchess by saying that it’s common amongst expecting mothers to do this, but the internet is not having any of it. Criticisms and tweets online have stated that Markle is being “annoying” and “rubbing it in to her haters” that she is carrying a royal baby.

Breaking Protocol

Following protocol is very important amongst the British royals. Last December, FashionMagazine.com created a comprehensive article listing down all the royal protocols Markle has broken. This includes painting her nails burgundy (the Queen has requested only neutral nail colors), wearing black consistently (black should only be worn during mourning), showing PDA, and voicing out her opinions (she says she is pro-choice for abortion). Markle also has broken numerous other rules before she was married to the Prince, such as being a divorcee and appearing on a magazine cover.

Kate vs. Meghan

Since Markle became the Duchess of Sussex, rumors about an apparent feud with Kate Middleton has been in the mill for months. Television documentaries such as “Kate vs. Meghan: Princesses at War?” have reported this. It all began with Markle’s apparent “diva-like” behavior, that Kate is not in favor of. Tabloids also published a photograph of Kate crying after a fitting for Markle’s wedding, that Markle hates walking behind Kate (as the future Queen, Kate walks first), and that William and Harry’s relationship has been strained because of this. In an essay by The Washington Post about the feud, they say that all the gossip should be taken with a grain of salt. Still, people online have decided to take sides. Many of which, are rooting for Kate, Duchess of Cambridge. The internet hate from Markle detractors have become so overwhelming (Kensington Palace reports they spend countless of hours managing negative and even racist tweets and comments), that Prince Harry pleaded in a statement that everyone stop harassing his wife.
