The biggest loser this year seems to be the HFPA, which is widely criticized and boycotted for lack of diverse representation in its voting pool.
People of color awardees took the spotlight at the Golden Globes 2022, earning record-setting victories perceived as a saving grace of the controversial ceremony.

The January affair was held as a private event this year with no celebrities, red carpet, or televised broadcast to announce the much-anticipated results. Instead, the accolades were presented through the Golden Globes’ website and social media accounts.
Broadcast partner NBC earlier decided against airing the awards, while leading film and TV companies like Netflix and Amazon boycotted the ceremony altogether.
Preceding controversies of the HFPA include having no Black members as well as allegations of corruption and racism. The award-giving body has since publicized measures it has taken to improve the organization to be “more inclusive and ethical.”
Notwithstanding the controversy surrounding the Golden Globes, winners in key categories who represented different minority groups spoke out to celebrate their achievements.
MJ Rodriguez became the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe, scoring Best Performance By An Actress In a Television Series—Drama for her role as Blanca Evangelista in Pose.
“This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals. They will see that it is more than possible,” Rodriguez posted.
“They will see that a young Black Latina girl from Newark, New Jersey, who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS. To my young LGBTQIA babies, WE ARE HERE. The door is now open, now reach the stars!!!!!”
Newcomer Rachel Zegler, who took home Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy for the largely Latino “West Side Story” remake, similarly took to social media to recognize her win.
O Yeong-su of the Netflix hit series Squid Game also became the first South Korean actor to collect a Golden Globe after being honored with Best Performance By An Actor In a Supporting Role On Television.
“While embracing the scent of our culture and the love for my family deep in my heart, I would like to thank everyone around the world. I wish you all live a beautiful life. Thank you,” the actor said in a statement through Netflix.
