‘Barbie’ Is Top Golden Globe Nominee, 'Oppenheimer' Follows

“Barbie” dominated the recently-released list of Golden Globe nominees with nine nominations, while “Oppenheimer” closely trailing behind with eight.

It continues to be a “Barbenheimer” phenomenon as both films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, top the Golden Globe nominations. However, the former dominated the list with nine total nominations, with the latter closely trailing by with eight.

Both films released on July 21, hence the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which actually boosted the films as per Variety. They will be competing in different categories at the 81st Golden Globes. 

The Beverly Hilton Hotel served as the venue of the nominees announcement and will be the venue of the awards ceremony on January 7 as per the Associated Press.

Barbie, the biggest woman-directed film debut

German data gathering site Statista pointed out that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie garnered a total of $1.44 billion worldwide. This figure made it the biggest film debut ever that a woman has directed. The movie made $155 million domestically on its first weekend alone.

Barbie told a story about the famous Mattel doll who went on an existential crisis journey and eventually became a woman. 

Gerwig’s film snags Grammy nominations

Barbie became such a smashing success that it continued to receive some well-deserved accolades. The movie received 11 Grammy nominations in November. 

The movie contained soundtracks which have high potential to win the Grammys to be held in February next year. Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” got nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” snagged a nomination for Song of the Year.

Both songs alongside Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” and Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj featuring Aqua’s “Barbie World” are vying for the category Best Song Written for Visual Media.

“Barbie World” and “What Was I Made For” earned Golden Globe nominations for Pop Solo Performance as well.

The film received nominations for the categories Best Score Soundtrack and Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Oppenheimer and Barbie, the perfect double-billing

Barbie herself, Margot Robbie, revealed in her Variety’s Actors on Actors with Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy, that she advocated for the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. 

Robbie told Murphy that a producer from Oppenheimer told her to move her movie’s release date. The actress did not back down and refused to move Barbie’s release date, which she also produced apart from playing the title role.

The actress expressed that she thought hers and Murphy’s movies had the perfect double-billing and that it was a great pairing. He agreed with Robbie and told her that she had a good instinct.

Barbie’s nine Golden Globe nominations

Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees from the Beverly Hilton Hotel. It is also the venue for next year’s awards ceremony. 

Barbie acquired nominations for the following Golden Globes categories: Best Picture, Musical or Comedy; Best Director for Greta Gerwig; Best Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach; Best Actress for Margot Robbie; Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling; and three Best Original Song nominations for “What Was I Made For?,” “I’m Just Ken,” and “Dance the Night.”

Oppenheimer trailed close behind with eight nominations: Best Drama Movie; Best Picture; Best Director and Best Screenplay for Christopher Nolan; Best Actor In A Movie Drama for Cillian Murphy; Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.; Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt; Best Original Score for ​​Ludwig Göransson; and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
