Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film dominated theaters as soon as it showed in cinemas worldwide. The film hauled in about $123.5 million globally according to a report done by Reuters. It’s poised to break the record of the film Joker which made almost $97 million in 2019.
AMC Theaters previously projected global earnings to reach between $126 million to $130 million from Thursday to Sunday.
The film started showing in theaters on October 13, wherein millions of fans bore witness to the success that is The Eras Tour. Fans had the experience of a lifetime singing along to Swift’s hits, exchanged friendship bracelets, and savored the feeling of watching the concert in the stadium.
That the film also garnered more than the $99 million Justin Bieber: Never Say Never earned in its entire run in 2011. Bieber’s Never Say Never is currently the record holder for a concert film, which The Eras Tour film has surpassed.
Swift’s The Eras Tour film an ‘undeniable hit’
The Eras Tour film emboldened fans to let loose through unique cinema etiquette where dancing is encouraged. Its cinema experience, premium pricing, merchandises, and Swift’s phenomenal performance in the tour made the film an undeniable hit.
According to The Associated Press (AP), the film earned about $39 million on its opening day due to opening in 3,588 North American locations with “surprise” evening previews on October 12.
Moviegoers dressed in their best clothes, concert t-shirts, and themed ensembles from their favorite Taylor Swift era for the showing. Most cinemas had fans singing and dancing along to Swift’s greatest hits spawned from her 17-year career.
Swift’s concert film earns an A+ CinemaScore
Analysts predicted previously that The Eras Tour film is to be a blockbuster hit and could make over $125 million. The industry estimates only fell a few millions short.
Senior media analyst for Comscore Paul Dergarabedian said the numbers are phenomenal because the blockbuster-style opening weekend is “unprecedented.”
“The laws of gravity don’t apply to Taylor Swift,” Dergarabedian said.
AP reported that critics and audiences gave the film an A+ CinemaScore. This metric points to signs that a film will continue to do well after its first weekend.
AMC Theaters’ chief content officer and the executive vice president of worldwide programming Elizabeth Frank expressed gratitude to Swift. Frank said Swift’s spectacular performance delighted fans, many of them are buying tickets to see the film several times. Frank added that they anticipate the concert film to play for big audiences for weeks to come.
Senior box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations Co. Jeff Brock weighed in that the film is a “superstar debut” as it was “a party in a movie theater.”
The Eras Tour film to have a theatrical run for 13 weeks
Swift’s fans have to wait a while for the concert film to be available on streaming as part of the AMC theater deal has an exclusive 13-week theatrical run.
AMC Theaters worked with its distribution partners to run the film in more than 8,500 movie theaters in 100 countries.
