“Hacks” Proved That a Great Series Finale Is Still Possible

By

In the ‘Hacks’ season finale, Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance got a sendoff as big and complicated as she always deserved.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Hacks

Series finales are a hard thing to do. They have to be everything at once. A “good one” is conclusive but not tidy, emotional but not maudlin, surprising but not cheap. Most shows fumble it. In the case of Hacks, though, it’s safe to say got there at exactly the right time. The Season 5 finale aired in the Philippines on May 28, 2026 and it delivered something pretty rare in prestige television: a satisfying ending that actually earned its tears. It did so by trusting the thing that made the show great in the first place, which is the relationship between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Whether the road to get there was always as tight as it could’ve been is a fair question, but the destination holds up.

The Comeback

The finale picks up in the aftermath of Deborah’s triumphant comeback show at Central Park. Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn) had done his best to sabotage her return earlier in the season, managing to undermine her sold-out Madison Square Garden show before she pivoted and broke records anyway. In the glow of that win, she, Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins) and Marty (Christopher McDonald) open The Diva, a Vegas comedy club named in her honor. Ava reaches her own milestone, finally getting her Who’s Making Dinner? pilot off the ground, a reboot built around the friendship of two women with a generational age gap, which is the show winking broadly at itself.

The Floor Drops Out

Over lunch, Ava learns that the mass Deborah had removed earlier in the season wasn’t the end of it. The cancer has spread, and Deborah has already made up her mind about what she wants to do. She refuses to spend whatever time she has left fighting a battle she might lose anyway, opting instead for one last trip to Paris and then a train to Zurich to end her life on her own terms.

The assisted-suicide storyline is the kind of swing a lesser show wouldn’t take, and Hacks mostly handles it well. It lands because the show has always understood that Deborah Vance controls every room she walks into, so it makes sense she’d want to control this too.

One Last Good Time

Paris, at least, is a delight. Before the weight of everything catches up with them, the two actually have a grand time. They haggle with flea market merchants, go clubbing, and in a callback to a running joke that pays off better than it has any right to, Ava finally eats real bread for the first time.

While there, Deborah makes dark, absurd jokes about the diagnosis, which is the kind only she could pull off. When Ava briefly steps away, Deborah reaches for her notebook and starts jotting down jokes out of pure instinct, preparing a set the way she always has. It’s one of the best things in the episode, just a woman and her notebook remembering who she is and what she’s good at. Finally, at a Paris train station, waiting for the Zurich connection, Deborah changes her mind at the last minute and decides to fight her illness and seek treatment. “I may not have 30 years, but I have an hour,” she says.

Why Hacks Is A Show That Always Knew What It Was

The season as a whole functioned as a long, deliberate exhale, wrapping loose ends with enough breathing room that nothing felt forced. It would’ve been a reasonable stopping point if the show had closed the curtain at Central Park, but there were still things that needed saying, and the finale said them without overstaying its welcome.

It closes on the women, arm in arm, walking the streets of Paris before the scene transitions to Las Vegas while Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland’s duet of “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again” swells in the background.
Hacks always knew what it was: a show about two people who needed each other to become who they were meant to be. The finale understood that assignment, and it did so by trusting its darker instincts.
