About Ang Tahanan Ni Bernarda Alba
Originally written in Spanish, The House of Bernarda Alba was Lorca’s last completed play, finished in June 1936, roughly two months before his assassination during the Spanish Civil War. He never saw it performed. The play eventually premiered at Buenos Aires’ Teatro Avenida in 1945, with actress Margarita Xirgu as Bernarda.
Since then, Lorca’s work has found new forms across languages and stages, including Tom Stoppard’s English-language adaptation for London’s Greenwich Theatre in 1973. At its center is the Alba household, where Bernarda imposes eight years of mourning and absolute obedience on her five daughters following the death of her second husband. Behind closed doors, silence, discipline, tradition, and appearances govern the family until the arrival of a potential suitor unsettles the household, bringing buried desires, jealousies, frustrations, and dreams to the surface.
The domestic conflict is a lens used to examine the policing of women’s behavior, the pressure to maintain appearances, and the struggle between authority and personal freedom. Bernarda enforces the very social restrictions that confine her daughters, turning her home into a space where protection and control become difficult to separate. TGA’s upcoming production reinterprets Lorca’s family tragedy for a Filipino audience, Salonga describing the work as one that “fits our cultureCultureshared traditions, beliefs, values, customs, arts, and social practices that define the identity and way of life of a community, society, or nation.Go to Culture Glossary” and feels timely given current events.
Lea Salonga Performs In Filipino For The Stage
For Salonga, the production marks a departure from the English-language musical theater roles that have defined much of her career. Known for her Tony Award-winning performance in Miss Saigon and Broadway productions including Les Misérables, Once on This Island, Allegiance, Flower Drum Song, and Here Lies Love, she now takes on a dramatic role performed entirely in Filipino.

Bernarda presents a different kind of challenge. Salonga describes her as a mother who raises her children through fear and rules her household with an iron fist. Understanding what drives a woman to become this way is part of Salonga’s preparation for the role. She’s also working closely with Luarca to navigate the Filipino script, asking about his choice of words and the layers of meaning within his translation.
With Salonga at its center, Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba offers a more familiar take on Lorca’s tragedy, bringing its questions about family, authority, tradition, and freedom closer to home.
