Blending Heritage: The Macallan and Bentley Collaborate for Sustainably Packaged Whiskey—Using Recycled Materials From Both Manufacturers - The Scene

The partnership repurposed copper from Macallan’s spirit stills. Meanwhile, aluminum was recycled from the production of Bentley’s car models: Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga.

The Macallan and Bentley Motors are collaborating for a scotch whiskey offering. Initially announced last year, the two luxury brands have given a glimpse of the partnership’s outcome. Although the actual liquor is still in the works by Macallan’s master whisky maker Kirsteen Campbell, the intriguing bottle design has been released.

“Taking inspiration from the automotive industry, we are showcasing our creative vision and concept development of The Macallan Horizon, which is among the most unique projects we have embarked on in our almost 200-year history.”
says Jaume Ferras, the Global Creative Director for The Macallan

Bentley’s headquarters inspired the bottle in Crewe, England. Interestingly, it’s designed to rest horizontally. “In the spirits world, everything is upright, such as our stills and our bottles,” Jaume Ferras, The Macallan global creative director, said in a statement.

“When we looked at the horizontal direction pursued by Bentley Motors as part of the automotive industry, it made us consider if and how we could adapt this format for whisky, which ultimately requires to be poured.” Ferras adds that the project titled, The Macallan Horizon, is among the most unique projects they’ve embarked on in their almost 200-year history.

The bottle uses “upcycled, repurposed or ethically sourced” materials from both manufacturers, like copper, aluminum, and wood

Interplay between materials

The bottle uses “upcycled, repurposed or ethically sourced” materials from both manufacturers. For instance, copper repurposed from unused spirit stills and aluminum recycled from the production of Bentley’s car models: Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga in Crewe.

In addition, recovered wood from both brands was utilized. “The form of the design has allowed us to almost treat light as another material in itself, and the interplay between light and the wood, aluminum, and copper materials is extraordinary,” Bentley head of design collaborations Chris Cooke said in a press release.

“In being both an object of beauty in itself and demonstrating such innovation, it’s a representation of what’s coming next from our partnership.” The product will be available in the market by summer next year.
