Scotch whisky maker The Macallan and French glassmaker Lalique have come together for a new whisky release.
Called Macallan M 2020 Release, the spirit is one of its darkest whisky and is the final entry in its 1824 series of sherry oak, single malt whisky. The prolonged contact with the cask, as Macallan describes it, creates a “rich chord of exotic fruit and spice flavor notes is mellowed to deeply hued perfection.”
“Aromas of date, fig, and ginger nutmeg lead into sticky date, baked apple, orange oil, and dark chocolate on the palate,” the whisky maker adds. “Vanilla fudge and a rich oak flavor come through before warming wood spices open up to a long-lasting ginger and raisin finish.”
It comes in two handcrafted bottles—clear and black—designed by renowned fashion and luxury goods designer, Fabien Baron, whose inspiration is from whisky maker’s six defining pillars of difference: The Macallan spiritual home, Easter Elchies House; the curiously small stills; the finest cut of new make spirit; exceptional oak casks; natural color; and peerless spirit.
This is reflected in the crystal decanter’s geometric features that “reflect and refract light, dancing the dark whisky to life.”
“[The] vision fuses aesthetic expression with commercial art in its finest form,” the whisky maker adds. “A darkness rich with promise, a light to sparkle in the sun—there could be no better expressions of single malt and contemporary crystal glassware to complement one another.”
The individually-numbered bottles also come with a crystal stopper and a deluxe box.
M and M Black 2020 release are the latest in the long history of partnerships and record-breaking collaborations between the Scotch whisky maker and French glassmaker.
In April 2017, one of The Macallan’s most sought-after collections sold for HK$7.7 million (£752,634) at Sotheby’s Spring Sale Series and set a new world record for any auction-sold whisky.
Called The Macallan in Lalique Legacy Collection, the line included six Lalique decanters from which contained the rarest single malts aged 50 to 65 years old. Along with the collection, housed in a natural ebony cabinet, were six pairs of Lalique Macallan glasses.
