Called Into Question: Journalists Review The Presidential Interviews Of Jessica Soho And Boy Abunda - Trending

Here’s how Soho and Abunda did in their respective interviews, according to the Philippine media.

Interviewers always look for the best angle when it comes to the questions they ask their subjects, but sometimes they don’t quite hit the mark.

The quality of the interview becomes even more apparent when the subject is a public figure like a prominent politician, businessperson, or celebrity.

Supporters and critics of these personalities alike will turn the tables against the person asking the questions. Everything from the interviewer’s preparation and credentials, to their beliefs and even their alleged biases, will be probed by the watchful audience.

This is exactly what happened with the recent airing of the Jessica Soho Presidential Interviews and the ongoing 2022 Presidential One-On-One Interviews with Boy Abunda.

Since Soho and Abunda featured the country’s leading presidential aspirants, everyone invested in the 2022 Philippine elections either tuned in or caught up with their top-trending interviews.

Among the millions of viewers were members of the local press. Also used to asking questions for a living, they wanted their colleagues Soho and Abunda to get the most out of the presidential hopefuls in terms of relevant information that would shape public opinion for the best.

Here’s what they had to say.

Soho and her team take flight

The Jessica Soho Presidential Interviews, which remains the #1 trending video on YouTube as of writing, was received well by both the public and the press.

Soho asked the presidential aspirants about their controversies, stand on key issues, and concrete plans should they be elected.

Journalists particularly commended Soho’s technique and her team’s research.

However, a point of improvement that the program received was not including presidential aspirant and labor leader Leody de Guzman, who was left out since only the top five names in surveys were invited.

Abunda makes fast talk

The ongoing 2022 Presidential One-On-One Interviews with Boy Abunda, meanwhile, was not as praised among the ranks of media.

Abunda, however, has said as a disclaimer that he is not interviewing the presidential aspirants as a journalist.

“Like I said, I’d leave it to journalists. I don’t have any illusion that I’m a journalist. I’m an interviewer. I don’t know if people understand that but in so far as I am concerned, I am an inquisitor. I interview people, I ask questions,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Recommendations by the audience included asking follow-up questions that are more specific and challenging.

During the interview of Vice President Leni Robredo, viewers claimed to have observed that Abunda was interrupting her while she was answering.
