Bidding for George Clooney’s Batman Costume Starts at $40,000

The coldest batman there ever was.

George Clooney’s Batman & Robin (1997) costume, famous for its visible nipples, is going up for auction late this month.  The bat suit is part of Heritage Auctions’ Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction from July 22 to July 23, with a starting bid of $40,000.

“This is easily the most famous—and infamous—Batman costume ever designed, as evidenced by the fact that all these years later, it continues to make headlines every time Tim Burton and George Clooney get asked about it,” Joe Maddalena, Heritage Auctions’ executive vice president said in a statement.

In 2014, during a Q&A session on Reddit, Clooney opened up about the controversial suit. “Well, I wasn’t thrilled with the nipples on the bat suit. You know that’s not something you really think about when you’re putting it on. You figure all bat suits have nipples, and then you realize yours was really the first,” the 61-year-old wrote, “Batman was just constantly cold, I guess.”

He added that the suit is just one of the “plenty” other things” he’s been embarrassed about, “Oftentimes it’ll be stumbling out of a bar drunk or something dumb like that, but as you get older, a major goal in life is [trying] to do less and less embarrassing things. You know, try not to face plant publicly as often as possible.”

More memorabilia

According to the auction house, the suit is in “very good to fine condition” and was made from foam latex, vinyl, resin components, leather, and other mixed media elements. “All expertly painted, finished, and assembled on a life-size poseable mannequin with hyper-realistic George Clooney head with prosthetic grade false eyes,” Heritage Auctions wrote under the lot’s description.

Other props from the movie and other films like Jim Carrey’s Riddler cane (opens at $8,000) and Danny DeVito’s The Penguin umbrella (opens at $3,000) will be up for bids.
