English singer and One Direction member Liam Payne died at only 31 years old.
Just hours ago, Liam Payne reportedly passed away after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
According to the police, they discovered Payne’s body in the building’s inner courtyard. An emergency crew responded to a call from hotel staff and confirmed his death.
Reuters reported that ahead of the unfortunate incident, the police were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol,” later identified as Payne.

Hundreds of fans, many still in shock, have gathered outside the hotel located in the Palermo neighborhood.
Brotherhood Bond
Payne’s fellow One Direction members—Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson—have shared messages following the news of their friend’s passing.
On the One Direction Instagram account, they posted a statement as a group, including Malik who previously left the band in 2015.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.”
The members have also written personal messages on their own social media accounts.
“Liam, I have found myself talking out loud to you, hoping you can hear me. I can’t help but think selfishly that there was so many more conversations for us to have in our lives,” Malik wrote.
“I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.”

On Instagram, Tomlinson shared, “I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.”
“I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be,” he continued.
Tomlinson also mentioned Payne’s seven-year-old son Bear, saying that if his son ever needs him, he will be “the Uncle Bear needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.”
Styles also took to Instagram to share his thoughts on Payne’s passing. “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it,” he wrote.

“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”
Lastly, Horan shared that Payne “had an energy for life and a passion for work that was infectious. He was the brightest in every room and always made everyone feel happy and secure.”
“I feel so fortunate that I got to see him recently. I sadly didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that evening, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s heartbreaking.”

Life and Times
Payne was born on August 29, 1993 in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, England. When he was young, he dreamed of becoming an Olympic runner.
However, he went on to study music technology at City of Wolverhampton College. “I didn’t enjoy the running as much as my singing and that really made my mind up for me,” Payne said in a 2010 interview.

In 2008, he auditioned for the fifth season of The X Factor. He made it to the judges’ houses stage but was then eliminated. Judge Simon Cowell encouraged the singer to return to the show in two years.
When he came back in 2010, he auditioned with the Michael Bublé version of “Cry Me a River.” That season, Payne was matched up with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik to form a boyband that would later take the world by storm.
As One Direction, the boys came in third place on the competition show. After signing with Cowell’s Syco Entertainment, the group released hit song after hit song. Throughout the band’s run, four of their albums reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

In 2017, Payne released his first solo song “Strip That Down,” a year after One Direction’s indefinite hiatus was announced. The song reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the UK Singles Chart. As a solo artist, he released the EP First Time and his first full album LP1.
In recent years, Payne has been openly discussing his struggles with alcoholism and his mental health. Last year, he celebrated his months-long sobriety.
He is survived by his son with singer Cheryl Cole, Bear Grey, who is now seven years old.
