Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition Is Finally Here In Manila

The multi-sensory exhibit has been all over the world but this is its first time in Southeast Asia.

From July 1 to September 30, 2023, Filipinos can now experience Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition at the North Wing of the Estancia Mall, Capitol Commons, Pasig City. The once-in-a-lifetime exhibition features some of the art world’s finest creations which visitors can see up-close and life-sized.

Called “Il Divino” (The Divine One) by his contemporaries, Michelangelo’s otherworldly masterpieces, such as “The Last Judgment” and “The Creation of Adam,” will be displayed in a never-before-seen format.

Through extensive research and cutting-edge technology, experts were able to replicate the Renaissance artist’s work, bringing his paintings on the Sistine Chapel’s ceilings to eye level. Each piece is accompanied by a written description and an audio guide, which guests can access through the “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel” app available for both iOS and Android.

A multi-sensory experience

Visitors will feel like they’ve been transported into the hallowed halls of the actual Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, discovering the history behind the artist and his works. To complete the ambience, Renaissance music specially curated by Manila Symphony Orchestra conductor, Marlon Chan, will be played as guests walk through the exhibit.

The exhibition offers a multi-sensory experience with visual, sound, and smell

Rounding off the multi-sensory experience, the exhibit mimics the smell of the era by dispersing subtle scents of patchouli, sandalwood, and frankincense.

While photography isn’t allowed inside the Sistine Chapel, guests at the exhibition are encouraged to take photos and videos (without flash). Aside from the artworks, there are plenty of photo opportunities, like at the set of wall-mounted fluorescent angel wings, and photo booths inside.
