Now that Valentine’s Day is over, here’s a list of couples that were once together and now broken up.

Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo

Ahhh, Song-Song couple. Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo worked together on Descendants on the Sun, where he played a member of the South Korean Special Forces Unit sent on a peacekeeping mission, and she played an ambitious doctor on the field.

The drama was a major hit, drawing a rating of 38.% and winning major prizes like the 52nd Baeksang Arts Award.

After the show, the two were mired in dating rumors, until it was finally confirmed: they were dating and engaged. The wedding took place in October 2017, at Hotel Shilla, one of Seoul’s grandest hotels.

Guests included other famous actors and actresses, like Lee Kwang-soo and Park Bo-gum. Song Hye-kyo wore a wedding gown by Dior. The couple honeymooned in Spain.

Sadly, the marriage ended in June 2019. No one knows the reasons why, although rumors abounded about their age difference being a factor (Song Hye-kyo is older by four years).

Since then, Song Joong-ki made his drama comeback in the hit show Vincenzo and Song Hye-kyo made hers in the recently finished Now We Are Breaking Up.

Nichkhun and Tiffany

Nichkhun, known as the Thai Prince and one of the most famous non-Korean idols in Korea, and Tiffany, a member of Korea’s most legendary girl group, made a great couple.

Rumors over the years were rife that they had been dating but the relationship was only confirmed in 2014 after the two were caught dining in a restaurant.

Because they were both members of major groups, the relationship received high scrutiny in the press and on TV interviews: they were usually always asked about each other.

One of the biggest things that happened was Tiffany accepting an award at the 2014 MAMA Awards and the camera panning over to Nichkhun, and the crowd cheering. For many reasons, this was the last idol relationship to be as public as it was (until Dawn and Hyuna in 2019).

A year later, however, they were broken up. Again, no one knows why but it’s commonly understood that busy schedules played a part.

Lee Seung-gi and Yoona

SNSD relationships (among other things) had a banner year in 2014. Other than Nichkhun and Tiffany, Lee Seung-gi and Yoona were also confirmed to be dating (there is also another SNSD relationship that came out that year but I’m not going to talk about it because I’m scared of the stans).

Singer-actor Lee Seung-gi, known as the “Nation’s Son-In-Law” due to his perfect, affable, butter-wouldn’t-melt image. Meanwhile, Yoona was South Korea’s It Girl and everyone’s ideal type.

The couple met as far back as 2007 at the earliest stages of their career: both were rookie idols promoting at the same time.

Over the years they met on more TV shows, most famously on the variety show Strong Heart where Yoona said Lee was her ideal type. They also hosted many year-end festivals and award shows together.

The relationship was revealed in 2014, and like Nichkhun and Tiffany, both couples were always asked about each other, and both gamely answered (as much as possible). In 2015, they broke up, but remain good friends. Last year, Lee was revealed to be dating Lee Da-in.

Lee Min-ho and Suzy

In 2015, actor Lee Min-ho and Suzy, a member of Miss A and known as “The Nation’s First Love,” were caught on dates, and a trip abroad together.

The two of them would go on dates together, making sure to enter and leave at separate times so as not to get caught. As much as possible, Lee and Suzy would make sure not to arrive or leave in the same car. Eventually, Dispatch News caught them doing exactly that.

In March, both Lee and Suzy left for Europe, albeit on different flights: Lee went to Paris for a photo shoot, and Suzy went to London for her own shoot. Lee then flew across the Channel to join her, and they spent time together. Suzy returned to South Korea a day before Lee.

Dispatch then broke the news, and the stars’ agencies confirmed it. Suzy called him a caring and warm person, adding that their time abroad was “spent together, like ordinary people.”

In late 2017, the couple broke up, but remain good friends. Suzy then started dating actor Lee Dong-wook for a brief period. Funnily enough, Lee Min-ho was rumored to be dating his The King: Eternal Monarch co-star Kim Go-eun, who herself was co-stars with Lee Dong-wook in the hit drama Goblin. It’s a small world!
